Fluff, Relationships, and Traditions

This entry is part 52 of 52 in the series 365 Challenge

So characters have habits, ways they interact with certain people and situations, things they do and like to do, stories and histories together. I've known a lot of my characters' for a long time but getting them all into fic is interesting, particularly for the ones I don't know that for.

I've got about five novelettes I want to turn out plus a short story, created out of the 5 Things Meme and then the whole Pieter/Ashen dynamic that originally played in my head before I even wrote that first Ashen drabble (and it is awesome to me, but got sidelined drastically with a deluge of other prompts), but, but, but...

I'm on day 265 of my challenge and story count 157 and I'm still plying angles and there's all those little things above that I'm itching to nibble at. Want to help a girl out?

Particularly of interest to me are things like where does Wesley work (not sure actually), and then relationship things that I haven't gotten to like how Justus always recognizes Shift regardless of her current form or demeanor, friendships, sibling relationships, Ilsa and her husband, etc.

Well, I figured that would spiral.

I'm not unhappy that it is spiraling.

Of course, I might be a bit impatient about wanting it sooner rather than later, but deferring it is probably for the best.

I think half the problem is I haven't dug into that world yet, so percolating and writing at the same time while ignoring the few pieces I've GOT in my head isn't working well. You might get some prefics, then the prompted one.

"Infrastructure. Gotta love it." Shift sighed and shifted into someone more businessy and matter-of-fact, ash-blonde hair in a tight chignon and white blouse crisp. She picked up the stack of papers outlining some general treaty conditions and guidelines that needed to be met. "Anyone want to take Varstohv?"

"What exactly are we divying up?" Sear asked as she came in from the back bedrooms and settled on the back of the couch.

"Don't fall on me," Kismet admonished.

Sear glanced agreement and returned her gaze promptly to Shift.

Shift answered, "Treaty implementation in law enforcement, government, etc. The treaty calls for three to five percent of us to stay in the business, so to speak." She nodded at Sear. "Voluntary."

Sear sniffed. "Count me out."

"Varstohv's stuffy," Justus commented.

"I like it," Kismet countered. "It's got culture."

"So's Glaston," he replied dryly. He tipped his chin to Shift. "What other cities you got?"

"Bellyn's mine," she said sharply, then shrugged at Protector's odd look at her. "I like it. We've got Riving..." She flipped the page.

Justus stopped her there. "I'll take Riving."

Rachelle cast him a surprised glance. "You want to keep working?" Anyone would have thought he would want out.

He shrugged one shoulder in anything but a casual gesture. "Law enforcement."

Shift made a note. "I'll put you down."

That's kind of a tall order they were asking for, wanting them to stay after what they put them through. I can see why they'd ask, but it's harder to see why anyone would want to.

Justus makes sense, since he thinks he's so changed he can't go back to what he was, but a lot of them would have no reason or trust to keep working for the government.

Have to wonder why Cate would, even if she was voluntary before.

Both sides wanted it. The operatives wanted someone to make them toe the line and plenty of them need somewhere to ply the skills they actually have, and there were a bunch of voluntary ones too. Most people don't talk about that for a lot of reasons.

Cate's reason is more... complicated. She's the one that actually negotiated the treaty and joined after they didn't meet the percentage.
