Fluff, Relationships, and Traditions

This entry is part 52 of 52 in the series 365 Challenge

So characters have habits, ways they interact with certain people and situations, things they do and like to do, stories and histories together. I've known a lot of my characters' for a long time but getting them all into fic is interesting, particularly for the ones I don't know that for.

I've got about five novelettes I want to turn out plus a short story, created out of the 5 Things Meme and then the whole Pieter/Ashen dynamic that originally played in my head before I even wrote that first Ashen drabble (and it is awesome to me, but got sidelined drastically with a deluge of other prompts), but, but, but...

I'm on day 265 of my challenge and story count 157 and I'm still plying angles and there's all those little things above that I'm itching to nibble at. Want to help a girl out?

Particularly of interest to me are things like where does Wesley work (not sure actually), and then relationship things that I haven't gotten to like how Justus always recognizes Shift regardless of her current form or demeanor, friendships, sibling relationships, Ilsa and her husband, etc.

Couldn't help myself last night. I think I blame the headache.


With a mew that was half-squeal half-plea, Shadow tried to evade the other kittens, not really enjoying this “playing” thing they said they were doing.

Of course, some of those kittens that were playing were the twins, and they were not the type people trusted on the best of days. Well, Alvin did, but that was different. They were a part of his hive, as strange as that was, and most of them preferred the twins over the chipmunks, since they were actually smart—if a bit psychotic.

Sophocles studied the scene and decided that he would have to intervene, but before he could, the leopard stepped forward, a paw coming down on either side of the small kitten, who blinked in surprise as she looked up.

Katya fixed everyone in the group with a stare that seemed to say, “Mine.”

Then she sat down and started to groom the kitten. Shadow decided that the leopard was one shadow that she did like and purred in contentment.

LOVE this. Too cute and Shadow does like a cuddly protector.



"Cuddly?" Ember eyed Shadow incredulously.

Shadow snuggled between Katya's paws and purred. Definitely cuddly.

:) It was hard to resist once the image of Katya claiming her came to me.

Cuddly. Haha. Though it's true. Katya does like to cuddle, but only on her terms. She's very much a cat in that respect. :)

Now, the trouble is... what if that protector followed Shadow home?

A/N: AU craziness that is totally your fault.



"Okay," Rachelle stated emphatically. "Here is where I draw the line."

Heather looked up from her computer to see Rachelle framed in the doorway and craned her neck to look over her shoulder. Her jaw fell open.

Shadow was climbing down off the couch with a gleeful, Look what I brought home! sort of feline triumph while a leopard sat on her haunches behind Shadow and looked about curiously.

Fear was not an option. It was a leopard, and fear was something Heather couldn't afford to feel, so she went into operative mode and stood up and glanced at Rachelle. "Do you have some sort of 'return-to-sender' function in there because we could sure use one right now."

"My life has become absurd." Rachelle seemed to be cycling through her database, then she threw some sort of field out ahead of her.

Heather dodged out of the way of it.

The leopard looked offended, downright offended, before she vanished abruptly.

Shadow wailed piteously. Heather focused on bringing her heart rate back to normal.

Rachelle picked up the kitten and scratched behind her ears, then handed her to Heather. "Some very interesting entries," she commented. "Dimensionals. Elementals—real ones. Leopard and weirdness. You might want to get her a leash."

Heather eyed her formerly cute, now thoroughly disturbing kitten.

"She didn't know any better," Rachelle commented as she started working away at the queue.

Heather hmphed and went to the phone to call Maker. She was going to a very fancy leash for that one.

"You want me to lock your cat out of pocket dimensions?" Maker asked incredulously. "You are joking, right?"

"She brought home a leopard," Heather said tersely.

"You're not joking."

"Can you do that?"

A long pause. A very long pause. A deep breath. "Let me work on that. Maybe you should follow her first?"

"Do I look like a dimensional to you?" Heather demanded. "Besides. Leopard."

"Right..." Another long pause. "Maybe Rachelle should follow her," he suggested hopefully.

"Thank you for figuring this out for me, Maker," Heather said sweetly, then hung up the phone.

Lol. The first one had me giggling, except poor Katya getting sent back in such a way.

Maker makes the whole thing that much more priceless because he wants someone to follow the kitten.

Although... Poor Shadow. No more meetings with the others. No more leopard protector. :(

It was time to remember what they were meeting about and get back to the core functionality of the Pets of the Unusually Gifted support group. They were here to commiserate, apply first aid, share tips and ideas, and otherwise support each other—not recruit new hive members.

Sophocles looked down at two twin kittens pointedly, said look by far more intimidating as it was backed up by Katya's bland agreement behind him.

"Are we agreed?" he asked the general council of cats, Alvin, a couple of chipmunks, and a new wagging puppy, Kip, who insisted on attendance as his master definitely qualified as unusually gifted with patience and other superhuman virtues.

Said council agreed.

Chocolate sighed relief. It was good to get back to figuring out how to cope with owners, not offspring.

Shadow agreed with a faint mew. "Anyone have a cure for singed tail?" she asked. Heather had gotten it good by accident when she channeled a lightning spark and sideswiped the aforementioned limb.

"Does it work like a burn?" Maggie asked. "Flint got me once and Cress made it all better."

"Cress is mine."

"We know, Clown Fish."

Shadow's ears pricked forward at that. "Clown Fish?"

"I have to swim," Clown Fish answered primly, then cautiously, "Shadow?"

Shadow shuddered, ears back. "I don't like them. Except Katya." She cuddled closer to the leopard, causing Maggie to back away from the injured tail.

Sophocles interjected, "Which brings us to a more important issue. Who knows how to evade my owner? They're trying to ground Shadow from meetings."

A general silence. Katya purred and picked up the kitten by her scruff.

Ember raised a paw. "I vote on the leopard picks her up and drops her off."

The general council agreed.

I was trying to think of how the characters on the other side would react to seeing some of the other special pets, but I didn't come up with anything. :/

Oh, come on. Wouldn't it be funny to see Alvin show up somewhere? Though I admit that cats are fairly... catlike everywhere.
