Fluff, Relationships, and Traditions

This entry is part 52 of 52 in the series 365 Challenge

So characters have habits, ways they interact with certain people and situations, things they do and like to do, stories and histories together. I've known a lot of my characters' for a long time but getting them all into fic is interesting, particularly for the ones I don't know that for.

I've got about five novelettes I want to turn out plus a short story, created out of the 5 Things Meme and then the whole Pieter/Ashen dynamic that originally played in my head before I even wrote that first Ashen drabble (and it is awesome to me, but got sidelined drastically with a deluge of other prompts), but, but, but...

I'm on day 265 of my challenge and story count 157 and I'm still plying angles and there's all those little things above that I'm itching to nibble at. Want to help a girl out?

Particularly of interest to me are things like where does Wesley work (not sure actually), and then relationship things that I haven't gotten to like how Justus always recognizes Shift regardless of her current form or demeanor, friendships, sibling relationships, Ilsa and her husband, etc.

Got it in one.

I like the fact that she still understands the difference between good and bad, right and wrong, and wants the former for her daughter. Though the problem is her statement that she knows, she just doesn't care. But that's okay. We'll get it taken care of. Eventually.

That part of Shift is still... good, the one that wants her daughter to be good. It's just that she needs to learn how to be that herself... or to want to be that, maybe.

I have a sneaking suspicion that she wants redemption just as badly as Justus, but she has a good case for why she doesn't consider herself eligible. Plus, she'd have to claw her way back out of conditioning that took when she was just a kid and do it on her own. Due to the dangers of their jobs, they were trained to be immune to therapy, torture, psychological what-have-you, etc., so yeah.

That's why I'm thinking it's got to follow Justus' dealing with everything, because he's got his own redemption tied to hers because he can't fathom her being irredeemable if he's not when she didn't have a choice and he did.

Their basic argument is this:

Justus ends up concluding that the Bible says God gives [evildoers] over to a reprobate mind and then they are beyond redemption. If she still knows the difference between right and wrong and calls good "good" and evil "evil," then she's not beyond redemption.

Shift feels that if she doesn't feel contrition for what she did to save her daughter and would do it again if faced with the same choice, then calling her change of ways repentance is meaningless.

Make sense?

Yeah, she has all that to contend with, but he would have a hard time accepting his without hers.

I had thought, personally, of the example of Manasseh as an argument, because he was forgiven after sacrificing his own sons to false gods.

I can see that not working for Shift since she doesn't regret what she did.

Then again, it could be argued, to a point, that what she did was almost justified in that she gave her life away for someone else, and no one has greater love than that.

I'm not sure that Shift would see it that way, but that would be why I still think she does deserve a chance.

That's how Justus sees it...

I haven't figured out yet how to get HER to see it that way. I know I have plenty of storyworld time to get there.

It can be very hard to make characters like her see their worth and their ability to be redeemed.

I've had a few resist that idea, some even for multiple books.
