Fluff, Relationships, and Traditions

This entry is part 52 of 52 in the series 365 Challenge

So characters have habits, ways they interact with certain people and situations, things they do and like to do, stories and histories together. I've known a lot of my characters' for a long time but getting them all into fic is interesting, particularly for the ones I don't know that for.

I've got about five novelettes I want to turn out plus a short story, created out of the 5 Things Meme and then the whole Pieter/Ashen dynamic that originally played in my head before I even wrote that first Ashen drabble (and it is awesome to me, but got sidelined drastically with a deluge of other prompts), but, but, but...

I'm on day 265 of my challenge and story count 157 and I'm still plying angles and there's all those little things above that I'm itching to nibble at. Want to help a girl out?

Particularly of interest to me are things like where does Wesley work (not sure actually), and then relationship things that I haven't gotten to like how Justus always recognizes Shift regardless of her current form or demeanor, friendships, sibling relationships, Ilsa and her husband, etc.

Kingdoms and Thorn Ficlet: Moral Support

A/N: Funny. I got this one when I misread Refuge as fudge, so here it is.



"Hot fudge is not the answer to all problems," Minder informed him, arms crossed and foot tapping on the heated tile floor in Rett's kitchen.

He shrugged and flipped the omelet in the skillet, then slid the cup of hot chocolate with chunks of melted fudge across the counter to her. "All problems Minder."

She rolled her eyes and took the mug, muttering unmentionables. She sipped it. "At least you haven't lost your touch."

Rett scoffed at that. Minder liked all things in the triple espresso variety, whether it be coffee or chocolate or caramel chai. That last was sickly sweet and spicy enough to burn. It wasn't hard to make things the way she liked them.

"So." He glanced at her, returned to his skillet, and flipped the omelet out onto a plate. "What's wrong?"

"Pestery fellow, aren't you?" she asked between sips. "Like a mosquito."

"And?" He put the skillet in the sink and grabbed a fork for his plate. Minder had always preferred hot oatmeal about twenty minutes after the chocolate, so he left it in the pot. "I repeat: what's wrong?"

She shrugged, shoulders hunching inward, then started a slow drain on her mug in lieu of sips.

"Stalling," he ribbed her.

She shrugged again and set the mug down. "Family stuff."

Rett paused. "What kind of family stuff?" he asked carefully.

"Brother going off the deep end, sister hating that she's not the oldest anymore, and parents fighting over the sibling rivalry?" Minder sighed and headed for the oatmeal. Twenty minutes early. She lifted the pot cover.

Rett set his plate down and walked up behind her to wrap her in a hug.

"Storm—"

"I can't fix it," he cut her off. "I know that. Believe me." He held her a little tighter, against the onslaught of too many bad family memories of his own. "Just let me be here for you."

She leaned back against him and nodded, saying nothing. She didn't have to.

Chocolate can help, though I think I might agree more with Shift about hugs being the answer to all problems. Chocolate is a close second, then maybe fic third.

It being a bit of a family thing surprised me. I guess I didn't think she'd go to him for something almost... ordinary.

Then again... I'm starting to think I could ship these two, and I like that she went to him a bit more than I should because of that.

Actually, I've been trying out shipping them. Aaaaaaaaaand... you have to remember with their background, that family problems are not ordinary. They are kinda huge at this point in their lives.

I kind of saw potential in their other fluffy snippets, but this was where it really stood out.

Yeah, it would be. It just doesn't seem like much to someone outside of it, where family drama is kind of... normal, I guess.

If I de-snippet this (meaning largely expand), it'd probably make a lot of sense that what's between the lines there is that her siblings just rejected her, which is tough when you're already the newcomer in a family you're just starting to fit back into. Which is why she didn't want to mention it all, just clear out of the house for a bit and find the easiest location to bunk out in, no questions asked.

Of course, Rett does have that overprotective streak...

Poor Minder. :(

So maybe he needs to be that protective one and confront her family about it. Or take her in and refuse to let her go because he's being overprotective.
