Worry not, you've already seen him still shambling around fairly cluelessly 10+ years later. I'm not big on taking the whole murder your darlings line of writing literally. Sometimes (most times) the small hurts are hurtful enough.

Having done my time as a technical writer, I can tell you that outlines are a very efficient way of relaying information in step-by-step format. However, for me they stay in the realm of the technical. With fiction I always feel like I have to write a book twice if I use an outline. The one time I didn't feel that was was for the story I just sold. I outlined that because my thoughts were racing so far ahead that I didn't want to forget any of the pieces vying for attention in my brain. That time it worked.
