Have a few:

01. MCU, Bobbi/Clint, "Morning Touch"

Bobbi's touch wakes him. She's still dressed, probably just got in.

She kisses Clint gently, like he's fragile and breakable. He closes his eyes against the soft sensation of her warm lips on his forehead then cheek. She runs one finger over the line of his jaw and he waits for her palm to smooth over his skin close enough to kiss her back.

She stills under the touch.

He opens his eyes, smiles at the familiar complicated expression on her face. "I'm okay," he tells her.

Bobbi just shakes her head, golden hair falling into her eyes. "This time."

02. Cowboy Bepop, Faye, "She Runs"

Sometimes she's fragile. Sometimes she thinks she's going to shatter into pieces, and then she runs as far into space and casinos or horse races and the shouts of bets as she can.

She isn't entirely sure sometimes if she's real, if she wants to be real. It's easier to glitter and fight and forget herself in the risk of a toss and a win.

She knows her real name is Faye, but she does not know the rest.

Memory tickles at the edges of who she is, another moment triggers something she can almost remember, and fragile, she runs.

03. MCU, Bobbi/Clint, "Give Me a Chance"

"Why did you save her?" Bobbi stares at Clint as if he's a stranger instead of her husband.

What could have possessed him to take such a risk or to throw away his orders so thoroughly? This is Clint. It's not entirely surprising, but the Black Widow?

She waits out the way his throat works and he looks away before finally shaking his head.

"She never had a chance, Birdie. I was— I never had a chance until someone gave it to me." He stares at her, seeming to will her to understand.

Bobbi softens and pulls him close. "Okay."

So I knew I wanted to write these three characters for the next Tower Party tag and the prompt delivered, because Strike Team Delta are the kind of people who don't like having a moment in the sun. It could have gone a lot of ways this story, but I just started writing and ended up with a lot of mistrust in the wake of SHIELD's fall and Natasha dumping everything online. It ended up with a hint of comicsverse backstory for Bobbi in that she's supposedly dead and had that done when she became a field agent to protect her family. The ending is a trifle ambiguous, as I have a deplorable tendency to do, but all in all, I liked it, I enjoyed writing it, and [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic saved me as usual with her MCU brainstorming brain.

I hope you enjoy!

So I wrote two exchange fics last month that were recently revealed.

The Room (Bad Blood/MCU)

I read my recipient's awesome letter and went and watched the music video for Bad Blood by Taylor Swift. Then I went back to the letter that said, doesn't this make you think Red Room? They were all women. But I also liked them as good guys and this was for Crossovering, so I decided they were the anti-Red Room, just like the Syndicate was the anti-IMF (in the trailer anyway), and then I decided Peggy Carter founded them and I never did get around to showing that Domino was Neena Thurman Domino and that Frostbyte was going to be the other Frost sister, but I did get halfway through the stuff I wanted to show that was playing through my head as I watched and listened over and over and over and over.

I also got to pretend that The Trinity did the procedure on Natasha from the David Hayter Black Widow screenplay and bring in a bunch of Agent Carter Red Room stuff with an unnamed Dottie cameo.

This is a fusion in the sense that Catastrophe, the main character of the music video, became Yelena Belova in my head. That was kind of the most fun part of all. I had a ball with this fic.

Kin (Escape to Witch Mountain)

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] vikingprincess, for the beta! I added a scene and cleaned up a bunch of stuff on her suggestions.

This was my, I'm writing the book not the movie, fic. This was my, why, AO3, do you think they're the same thing? fic. This was my I love the worldbuilding of the book better fic. This was my reason for signing up to Fic Corner.

Basically, the recip didn't have any particular requests for the book, so I just went with the first thing that popped in my head, which was Nellie Malone, their Granny, and her outsider POV raising them. Nellie never knew they had special powers, but she was their family, and I wanted to explore that a bit, especially since in the books, they were older when they left her than they were in the movie.

It's sweet, backstory, family fic. Sometimes that's exactly what I want to write.

Just a handful because I wanted to:

01

Clint feels Natasha's back tense under his hand in the bed. He gently presses down until he is certain she has registered him and will allow him to roll over, body against hers, and turn off the radio alarm clock she favors. He gave her a look the first time he woke to a Czech reporter's voice, but she just gave him a look back, like he should know that orienting herself on waking is something she won't forego.

Sao Paulo. The hospital fire. Clint turns off the alarm clock and nestles a kiss where her shoulder curves upward into the graceful line of her neck. He waits until she is silent and still again before lifting his head to see if her eyes are open.

Her hand on his arm stops him from pulling away. She opens her eyes and breathes in one uneven inhale before steadying.

He rubs his hand over her spine and feels the way she arches gently into the touch. She likes to curl into him, like he is comfort, like he is a shelter against the world they live in.

02

She reached out into the shadows and laid her hand gently against his skin, heart tightening in her chest, and she prayed he wouldn't stir and wake.

The faintest motion brought his eyes blinking open, a shift of his body and sunlight touched his skin.

No.

He was beautiful, hers. She could see the pained look in his eyes as his mouth opened and before he could speak, could touch her himself, skin became soft feathers beneath her touch, wildly beating wings, as her hawk was wrenched away from her by another dawn.

03

She wakes up in a SHIELD medical wing and slurs out, "Where's Laura?" but Clint only turns to her blankly from his toe-to-toe fight with Fury over her continuing survival.

Her heart sinks. Laura was insurance. Laura would have protected him from her.

I love the tone of this story. It fits with the vibe I expect from these two, and the banter and the secrets and the denial (she is soooo in denial about being in love with Hunter here) and the history, which I've begged for time and again in exchanges, it's here and it's perfect and it's so like them.

I love this story. She managed to work in Clint/Bobbi history too without demonizing anyone and let Bobbi be Bobbi, which is to say quite flawed but I love her anyway, and let Hunter be Hunter, which is to say also flawed and insightful while still totally missing the mark half the time in the things he knows about her. That tension they have on the show is here and I love this fic so much.

Ahem.

So go read.

In Your Eyes

As for what I wrote, I wrote two fics, my assignment which thrilled me to pieces to get and a pinch hit the letter utterly sold me on.

[livejournal.com profile] findthesea helped me finesse this one (and decide whether it was any good at all). I always feel so at sea when I first hammer my way through a pairing and am trying to get their voice right. I rewatched a ton of Wanda clips and vids over and over and over and hoped for the best. (I think I'm in love with Wanda.) I stalked [livejournal.com profile] theladymore's journal and totally participated with Wanda in her give me a character meme and I'll tell you what I love about them.

I couldn't get to the bedroom stuff, though the ideas were there, because for some reason, I had to write the get-together fic first and fic out why I thought they'd work and how they'd get drawn together.

Normally, I don't like the premise that Laura's Barney's widow, but for this fic, I ran with it, and I don't honestly regret the choice, so there it went.

The Queen, In Exile

I don't even know what to tell you. This fic, this fic. The letter asked for so many things that hit my buttons and I just wanted to write it when I saw that letter and pounced fast before someone else could grab it. Then I hit crunch time and their voices weren't working for me, I wasn't sold on the relationship like [livejournal.com profile] aurilly, my recip wanted, and really the big problem was getting the crossover to work to my exacting standards.

Handwaving works to a point, but the more I dug into Narnia, the more I was convinced that the rings would never strand Susan out of time. She was just a little too young for Bucky in their original times and my recipient wanted Bucky, not the Winter Soldier, which I slowly began to realize I only knew through fandom osmosis.

Prince Caspian saved me. I started my canon review with The Horse and His Boy to pick up the royal speech patterns, but there was also commentary on Susan's personality that made me think of the other book, and behold! Royal speech patterns! I dug in and there was this throwaway line from Aslan about chinks between the worlds. I pounced on that so hard and the fic started pulling together from Susan's side. The more I read, the more I loved her. I kept in mind Lewis's saying that basically Susan's story was a more mature, complicated story rather than a children's one. He wasn't trying to say, she had a life, that's bad, so I dug into that because I wanted to do her justice without destroying what the book was really trying to say en brief.

So basically Susan, chinks and chasms between worlds that all work differently, and Aslan in all of them.

Then He sends her back to the MCU and I'm home free, right, because I've done all the brainstorming for her and Bucky and why they work and their scenes together? Yeah, no. I know Winter Soldier in MCU fine enough from watching CA2, but I really never watched all of Bucky's material (or almost any) in the first movie and I had to go canon review him and watch and watch and watch until I felt like I had a handle on him.

In short, this was an unexpected fic I never expected to get the reaction it did. I'm a little awed by how many people liked it and how well. I barely resisted writing Clint + Susan archery contest fic. And my nonny beta was gloriously awesome. Like awesome, awesome.

So. Have a fic.

Five Times They Were Just Friends and One Time They Weren't

I've been hankering to write Maria/Clint for a while (there's a ficlet about an accidental soulbond I've wanted to expand since I wrote the thing), so when this pinch hit came through, I snatched it up instantly. Then stalled out.

I have no less than three aborted drafts sitting in my Trello docket for me to finish later at some undefined future time.

I finally started writing a 5+1 falling asleep/sharing a bed fic and intended to toss in all the recipient's likes, such as slow build, competence, mission fic, friends to lovers, pining with a happy ending, friends with benefits... It went a little differently in the writing, as fics often do, and it's still a 5+1 with sleep/sleep space in all 5, but not in any consistent way.

I like it though, and I felt like I actually did it a little bit of justice and am starting to get comfortable enough with this pairing that the fics might turn out good if I keep at them, so there's that.

Apparently, I once started an AU where Clint rescued Natasha from Odessa and it wasn't a SHIELD job the Soldier shot her on.

He finds her bleeding out and half dead, blood bubbling up through her stomach and abdomen and the name of a ghost a whisper on her lips.

He looks at her, dying slowly in misery, with eyes still too alert not to see him and try to track his movements as he comes in close. There is pain in her eyes, betrayal, but no fear.

"Natalia Romanova," he says quietly as he crouches down beside her.

She's still lucid. He can see understanding flickering in her eyes and hear the gurgling under her ragged breaths.

He was left to bleed out once, that look of betrayal in his eyes. He says it because he thinks it and because he will follow up on it, "You deserve better than this."

His name is Clint Barton. He is a SHIELD agent, and she is the target he has been tracking for the last six months. She is wanted in more than a dozen countries. She is beautiful and lethal. Her palms are bloody, her ribs bruised, and there's a car at the bottom of the cliff. She dragged her charge up here to the top again with her own strength, only to be shot and left dying.

His brother left him on the ground once, blood gurgling up in his throat. Clint should have died that day, and he won't do the same to anyone else. Not even the Black Widow.

"Don't save me," she whispers through hoarseness when she finally wakes days after he brought her in and the medical team operated.

He sits up a little in the uncomfortable chair he'd nodded off in. He almost tells her it's too late, but she won't thank him for it. He shrugs at last. "You deserve better than this."

She hates the word. He sees the anger and resigned displeasure in her eyes as she goes through therapy, and her physical weakness buys them time to acquire her loyalty. At last, she tells him he has no need to acquire it.

"I owe you a debt."

Clint jerks back violently. "You don't."

Natasha just stares at him impassively, immovably. "You saved my life. I was your target."

"I didn't sell you into SHIELD slavery," he retorts. "Work here if you want to, but you don't owe me anything."

She tightens her mouth into a grim line but refrains from further comment.

Written by a woman. Go figure.

An excerpt:

Johansson plays Black Widow in a complex and understated way, fitting for one of the most interesting characters in the franchise. While her romance subplot with Bruce Banner is rather out of left field and at times very clunky, Black Widow is never reduced to an accessory for the male character and always has strong motivations outside of that relationship—a rare thing indeed in nearly any “blockbuster” movie, let alone one based on comic books. Her revelation that the “graduation ceremony” of the Red Room involved sterilization to make her a more effective assassin by removing the possibility of family is opaquely written dialog rendered clear only by Johansson’s performance: Natasha thinks of herself as a monster not because she cannot have children, but because of all the things that were done to her to make her into an assassin, with that as the crowning event. That Natasha simultaneously considers herself a monster and is still “Auntie Nat” to Clint Barton’s children highlights the emotional complexity that defines Black Widow.

Technically, this was a review of the entire movie and in a venue I read and appreciate, Strange Horizons, not just a review of Natasha, so here's a link to the rest. Enjoy.

So as I dig into this intelligence community research, my whole perspective is shifting a bit on a few things.

  1. Did you know law enforcement and intelligence are separate? I know [livejournal.com profile] alphaflyer probably knew that, but it explains a lot to me, including why SHIELD's I stands for Intervention not Intelligence.

  2. I totally get SHIELD's gripe with the X-Men now. It's like the private *coughs* vigilante *coughs* organization that's trying to do SHIELD's sanctioned job without said sanctions. Granted, they have the tools to do it (powers), but they should be joining agencies like SHIELD, except treated like... Oh, right. Still, I get the tension now and the issues and why SHIELD is not fond of the X-Men as a rule.

  3. The IMF and SHIELD are both law enforcement agencies and that changes a lot about the color of how they gather and gain intelligence and then what they do with it.

  4. The IMF, especially being as top secret as it is, is probably considered a terrorist organization to other countries in much the same way that the Red Room could be considered the same to nonSoviet bloc nations. I get why the disavowal thing. Wow. Wanton property damage, "an organization of chaos" indeed, etc. SHIELD gets away with it largely and only because they're intervening in situations where the wanton property damage and fallout is already a given and not started by them. When it is started by them without justifiable causes, I imagine those agents get in a lot of trouble.

I could be reading this wrong, but that's my impressions so far. I am duly fascinated.

Drift - Jemma/Bucky

When I got sick, the first thing to go was my ability to read anything longer than 3K or so words. I ended up watching Andromeda, a show I loved growing up and had never seen all of or all in order. I'm through season 2 now, btw, and I discovered I love it better than Star Trek. It hits my embarrassment squick less frequently, though I haven't the faintest idea why.

So that said, when my first idea for a Jemma/Bucky fic started fighting me (see Stay by the Wayside below), I realized I needed to get a story written on time and it wasn't going to be Stay. I combed through [livejournal.com profile] hiddencait's letter (and I'm pausing to mention here I squeed so hard when I got assigned to her) and tried epistolary (no), fantasy courtship (whoa, no), and coffeeshop au before I noticed space AU again and thought, at least I know I can write space cultures.

What immediately flew off my pen was an Andromeda fusion. I had a ball and everything fit in so easily because I'd been inhaling this 'verse and knew just how it worked. And it's ensemble. I could fit everyone in there. And I could make Jiaying/Cal + Skye happy and healthy. And I got to nod in the direction of Clint/Natasha. And I got to write Fitzsimmons and gluten-free baking. :grins: I love this little story.

I didn't know there would be a first story when I wrote Steve/Maria having a professional disagreement and she runs the school and he runs the training and there's Extremis Pepper commiserating over significant others and Skye angsting over her powers off-screen. And Wanda and Pietro floating around in there because I really just wanted to write something for [livejournal.com profile] tielan (she's another one I love to write for) and when I read her letter, I kind of wanted to write everything so combined it all in one fic. Superhero school for Steve/Maria, neighbors Pepper and Maria, and bonus Wanda and Maria interacting.

Plus, sentient kitchenware. It should be a whole new trope on its own.

Stay (By the Wayside) - Jemma/Bucky

This fic rammed into my brain from the first time I read [livejournal.com profile] hiddencait's letter, precisely because all the AUs she picked made me go, hm. I had offered Bed and Breakfast AU with the idea of challenging myself but I hadn't really thought through any ideas with this pairing.

So I decided to do something different and actually go through the general likes and incorporate. I was originally going to have shower sex and maybe wall sex and definitely huddling for warmth, but yeah, in the end, it didn't happen, and I don't even care because there was makeup sex and semi-canon-compliant (aka canon divergent) bed and breakfast where his story is still the same, just Jemma's running a B&B safehouse instead and I ran away with that. I had to bounce of [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic because total AU sounded more reasonable but she gave me the thumbs up to go for it, and I did, and I'm glad I did. I liked the idea too much to let it go.

Then I had to take a break and work on other exchange fics due, which lost me my great inspiration and I had to get reinspired. This was submitted as a treat literally 1 HOUR before the collection opened. I almost didn't make it in time. But I did. :grins:

So um... these weren't supposed to be not anonymous yet, but since they are, here goes.

First I wrote Skye/Trip because I felt like it and I wanted to write [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic something less gen and more deserving of the M rating. What can I say?

Then I realized I hadn't written the pairing a lot and wasn't sure how well I did and decided to write her a second fic just to make sure she'd have a gift she liked. (Besides, she had all these awesome prompts.) And out came this really angsty, aftermathy piece about Bahrain and the divorce of Andrew and Melinda, which :cries: because I ship them something terrible.

Another super poetic piece, oops, so in the end, I just hoped that between the two, [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic would have something nice.

Being me, I then went for treating, and I've had a hankering to write Clint/Laura and there was this nice little prompt about Laura making space for all these people he brings home and his nonconventional family and out this rolled.

This fic, this fic. It makes great use of a dream, hints at potential deafness, great platonic relationships between Clint and Maria (as his SO, squee!), Clint and Natasha (his tattle-telling partner, more squee!), and Clint and Bobbi (first meeting, paired up for a mission), and she does her Bobbi takes care of her team and cares about everyone on it thing and they're all in character and it's military and realistic and AWESOME.

And then there's the soulmate/soulmark fic. I warned you once, right? It will break your heart. It's perfect. It's lovely. It's complicated because soulmates ARE complicated and that's what I love about them.

So I resolved a while ago to talk a bit more when I announce fic I've posted.

I'm neck-deep in Tracing Trouble, due Friday with a lot of grace on the [livejournal.com profile] heroinebigbang's mod, but it's so big, it's starting to feel unwieldy and hard to write, so I wandered through [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic and wrote something to the first prompt that I could.

The prompt was any rare pairing, in the background, and immediately I thought of Maria Hill. [livejournal.com profile] tielan and [livejournal.com profile] frea_o made me fall in love with her and I often see [livejournal.com profile] tielan wishing aloud that Maria wasn't so in the background. It's ironic to me how a woman whose face is at the very front of SHIELD is nevertheless in the background, in the shadows, and part of the wallpaper/setting/behind-the-scenes, and it feels almost as if that's deliberate on her part too.

Normally, I can't get a hold of movies to watch but I did very recently score a viewing of most of Age of Ultron and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. So when I saw the prompt, Maria and Bucky were both on my mind. They both operate in the shadows during Winter Soldier—Fury specifically told Maria too—but both are also squarely in the spotlight.

The asset performed. He was out there, brazen, and hardly covert about who saw him doing what when he went after Natasha and Steve. Maria occupies a high position that makes her quite visible in SHIELD and the intelligence community. And yet, she was in shadows and he was a ghost. It's an interesting balance. I'm absolutely certain I didn't balance that in this story, but I did get to at least take a look at a tiny facet of this thing about them that intrigues me. So there's that.

Bourne Legacy: Mend

So there's this theme in The Bourne Legacy of lostness. It's used in different ways and that's part of why it resonated so well at the end of the movie for me when Marta says she was hoping they were lost. She spends so much of the movie a little lost and a lot broken and you can see that there was emotional/personal trauma before the events of the movie, then she went through a lot of trauma in it that isn't really glossed over. She's lost, she doesn't want to know, she shuts down Aaron when he asks her what she thinks they do out there, if she realizes the practical application of her "science."

"We were there for the science," she said.

"You cannot be that naive."

Throughout this movie, she wants to be lost, she doesn't want to look at things, but even in that, it changes from this broken, head-in-the-sand thing to knowing and choosing to turn away for something better and different and becomes healthy. It's fascinating. Thus, this fic.

Hawkeye: My Bruises Are All Older Than You

Hawkeye and Hawkeye and bad date were the prompt. Bad date. Their bad date? It didn't feel right. It niggled and I looked and I got a bad date for Kate and Clint being there for her and there's history with Kate and why she became a hero in the first place and there's history with Clint and why Kate's history is something he didn't handle well in the comics in the past. This resulted.

Hawkeye: Legacy (or What's in Me is in You)

There's this panel in Fraction's run where Clint says what's in him is in Kate, and the prompt was "I'll be reaching for the stars with you; who cares no one else believes," which made me think of how Clint's the first to correct anyone who thinks of Kate as the junior half of their duo. He'll tease, "protege," but she's not junior or lady hawkeye or anything like that. She's Hawkeye just like he is.

Those thoughts just collided and here, have a ficlet.

I was shocked at how much response this Clint/Bobbi piece got. [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic did the asking and it was looking for yourself in someone else, and here came this moment when I thought about what Bobbi was looking for in Clint and found. A lot of Bobbi/Hunter feels cropped up and rebounding and rebound sex and secrets and lies and what that means in a spy's spy's world and the fact that MCU Clint seems pretty good at the kind of comfort a spy's spy will accept. So here you go.

Man, Wife, and Slinky Dress for Space Swap

So for [livejournal.com profile] space_swap, I wrote Firefly and quickly realized anew the pain of forging into a new fandom/pairing and trying to sound like it's not your first fic for them. Honestly, I don't think I rose above it, but it was fun to write anyway.

I did the canon review thing and watched "Shindig" and wanted to know more about the slinky dress, so just wrote about Wash, Zoe, and a slinky dress.

So for [livejournal.com profile] shipswap, I wrote an assignment, a treat for my recipient because I really wanted to write both prompts, and a pinch hit.

Coffee with a Side of Romance for Ship Swap

I have this work in progress for a coffee shop/prostitute AU inspired by my Trope Bingo card for The Unusuals with a sketch that actually makes me want to write more, and their prompt about Beaumont and Walsh's relationship, the casual trust and her being more in control and liking AUs and developing relationship just kind of prompted me to write how the two came together in this little offshoot world of mine where she's still a cop, but Walsh is really just runs the diner.

I had fun with it and recip liked, so yay. Beta'ed by the awesome [livejournal.com profile] hiddencait.

Sometimes that's exactly what Allison needs.

Safe Space for Ship Swap

So my recipient also liked Clint/Bucky gen or paired as bonding over being snipers and friends with Natasha and this piece and all she prompted about it just kept building up in my percolating muse until this piece spilled out.

I wrote a paragraph to introduce and it wasn't enough. I wrote it again, building on it, and I let his memories and feelings just layer over one on top of the other, and it was poetry and repetition and experimental and I knew perfectly well it wasn't everyone's cuppa, but it was me, all me and what I love about writing and bringing disparate threads together and how Natasha forged this bond between the two men even in absence and how she goes neatly behind Steve's back while never lying and takes care of someone who used to take care of her and there are secrets here and history and it's written between the lines and this is why I write.

:le sigh: I really am a literary writer at heart.

The Rule Where Falling Asleep Isn't Sleeping

The less said, the better.

No, no, that's not fair. So much was invested in this fic. So much help came for this fic. My recipient liked this fic.

I wrote the last scene at the tail end of Legacy and [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic nicely told me, great scene, wrong fic, and she was totally and utterly correct. Then lo and behold, this pinch hit comes through, I pounce, and I say, "I'm going to write the fic for this scene."

And failed spectacularly. I couldn't get it to work because Clint's oblivious and stuck in his own head and failings and the whole thing just didn't want to come together. [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic patiently handheld and bounced and then the collection went live, I panicked, tweaked in a couple more changes, and let it go because I had no other choice.

I hope the ending doesn't come out of left field anymore because the story is now officially done.

That last Dottie scene in Agent Carter gave us soooo much insight into Dottie's psyche and I have soooo many Dottie + Peggy headcanon on how Dottie felt about everything, the reality of what kind of creature the Red Room turned out with her that stays hidden under the facade even to them.

I had a title and a snippet:
