Fic: Can't Keep This (Quiet)
Mar. 19th, 2015 08:41 amSo I've been writing about soulmates and/or soulbonds since the story idea that founded Vardin and Kingdoms and Thorn, long before I ever encountered it in fic. One of the things that characterized my fascination was the idea of irrevocable bonds, of how those bonds were formed and maintained, and most of all, how messy it gets when the ideal equation, to use a science term, hits real life.
In real life, people fall in and out of love. People don't always do the hard work of relationships right. People can become good or bad and change in response to trauma. They grow apart, they grow together, or circumstances tear them apart or throw them together.
This particular story arc idea came about because, as always, I wanted to explore an edge case, the outlying possibilities. There's a concept in fanfic out there of platonic vs. romantic soulbonds, and I always go, how do you know? How do you know which is which and how did this consensus come about and if you have a platonic soulbond, does it interfere with forming a romantic one? In this world, it does, and their whole history rolled out in my head from there.
At some point, I'll write out more pieces of the epic because what's in my head is epic. I gifted this fic to
enigma731 because it was talking to her about Bobbi and then Bobbi and Clint and Natasha together that made me want to write it again.
towerparty gave me the perfect prompt for it when I got tagged, and this is the first piece, as usual smack in the middle instead of at one end or the other.
I don't intend to leave them broken up, and there's a whole lot of story of their coming together that I especially want to get around to ficcing, but it's a start.
