If they're going to kill a character and redeem them later, then why even bother writing it in the first place? I wouldn't have cared what happened to the guy who died if I'd read about him dying first. I'd know he was dead, and I wouldn't bother trying to read about what he did because he was going to die and it would only be upsetting.
Not that I'd be any gladder to read when he died as a surprise, but then again, there's a reason why I don't read a lot anymore.
