Nah. He knew exactly what he was getting with her and never did see coming any more than she did when she actually did fall in love with him. It's not that she can't take romance; it's that she can also leave it and be as happy. The song covers more the span between when she realizes he fell in love with her to the time when she finally gets her medical issues worked out. She had a ton of good reasons for not wanting him to fall in love with her and for being ticked off when he did.
It worked out in the end though, but since I'm writing something that spans this issue with them, the song is a godsend.
