“I never expected victory to feel so... hollow.”

Vred glanced in Alik's direction. “You never expected to survive to see 'victory.'”

Alik inclined his head, acknowledging that statement as true. “That does not make this feel any more satisfying. It simply leaves yet another hole in what is already a gaping void. We didn't win anything. Not here. Not now.”

“It was never about winning. It was about surviving.”

Alik snorted. “For you, maybe. No, not for you. For them. Not us.”

Vred said nothing. Alik's eyes drifted back to where the others were, Lisea and Malina holding onto each other in relief, Enadar and Felise wrapped up in an embrace born of the need for confirmation, wanting be sure the other was still alive to love.

“Let them have their moment,” Alik said, turning to leave. Their moment, not ours. Never ours.
