Angst, Fluff, and Inferno

scribblemynameLet's take the third first. Overhauling the story from inferno, aka "Dowse and Bleed," left me feeling drained and exhausted, but it's out to beta and may she not find any more structural issues that need addressing. For that matter, may I not!
On angst: I write a lot of it. I know that. I've been buried it in lately and I feel a desperate need for something light, fluffy, and humorous, so on to point two:
Anyway I need something light and fluffy to clear out some headspace. Anyone want to give me

Kingdoms and Thorn Ficlet: Breathing Room

Rachelle had curled up on the couch with the cat—Sophocles—and a book, wearing said shirt. “God forbid,” she retorted, turning the page.
He raised both eyebrows at that. “They’re nice shirts.”
“They’re your shirts.” She scooted over to make room for him on the couch.
“Still wearing them,” he said, pointedly looking at the button-up.
Rachelle shrugged and returned to reading. “I don’t like robes and I need the breathing room.” True enough, but…
He chuckled and scratched behind Sophocles’ ears. “Sure.”

Date: 2013-09-04 10:03 pm (UTC)Rachelle crashed in Justus’ place whenever she stopped in Riving, but since she hadn’t actually planned to stop by, she hadn’t exactly packed a bag.
It took her all of ten minutes to decide whether she wanted to go to a store and buy a nightshirt or borrow something from Justus.
Sear did a double-take when Rachelle stepped in the laundry porch wearing her favorite of his sweaters. (Rachelle had never told him she had a favorite.)
“You’re really going to swipe his shirt?” Sear asked incredulous.
Rachelle gave her a look. “Since you failed to notice, I already did.”

A laundry room in whatever American dialect my grandmother grew up around (Nebraska, California mostly I think).

“You’re not blind.” She crossed her arms.
He grimaced, remembering that she responded to the name he chose. Then he looked at Sophocles and groaned.
Rachelle flashed him a smile. “He treated it more kindly than my jacket a month ago.”
“Sophocles...”
Sophocles meowed unrepentantly.

Her options on the couch for protection were slim: Justus' pullover sweater—one of her favorites on him, or her own thin white button-up. Thick or thin, the choice was obvious.
She yanked over the sweater in the nick of time, just before Sophocles pounced, tested the material, then curled up onto her stomach, tearing the clothing until it was sufficiently comfortable.
"Crazy cat," she griped at him.
Undisturbed and thoroughly content, Sophocles purred.

She hmphed.
“What are you going to call him?” Sear asked, daring to pet the offending creature.
Rachelle resigned herself to the inevitable. “Sophocles.”
Red Wolf blinked. “As in tragedies?”
The rest of her team chuckled, but Rachelle disagreed.
“As in, that cat is doomed to the indoors the rest of his life. He’s just going to have to get philosophical about it.”

“What did you do?” Chocolate demanded.
“I tried to go outside. I shed cat hair on her jeans for that one.”
Chocolate preened. “I had kittens.”

Her offspring... Well, I could see each of them being just like her, and with the elementals around... The results could be terrible. Funny, maybe, but I don't think Cress' kitten would ever forgive him for naming it after a fish...

“Cress should have a bell,” agreed Ember, another of Chocolate’s kittens. “If he’s feeling under the weather, it should ring and tell us to get out before we all are.”
Sophocles had not yet stopped trying to groom the kitten dry. He was rather bedraggled himself, missing a noticeable chunk of fur out of his bruised tail and half of his hair standing on end.
But as he pointed out, “At least children aren’t fatal.”
