Angst, Fluff, and Inferno

scribblemynameLet's take the third first. Overhauling the story from inferno, aka "Dowse and Bleed," left me feeling drained and exhausted, but it's out to beta and may she not find any more structural issues that need addressing. For that matter, may I not!
On angst: I write a lot of it. I know that. I've been buried it in lately and I feel a desperate need for something light, fluffy, and humorous, so on to point two:

I may have assumed all the operatives were, but I also got that impression from the 12% and the preprocessing and a few other things, so... I was a bit confused when I saw regular but then I wasn't able to figure out what his ability was, either. I thought I'd gotten the sense that he was a healer of some kind from an early draft of Dowse and Bleed, but.. he's not?)
Back to Lightsculpt and Sketch... How did she get out before the rebellion? Did he help her? Cate was voluntary, wasn't she? So was he? Was Sketch?
Hmm. As for Storm... He did show some concern for Whisper before, so maybe that's where the fluff would come in. The other thing I'd be curious about is what made him choose to step down and let Red lead.

He wasn’t given the report on who it had been, only handed a slim file with the results of testing on two teenage males. One qualified for processing; for the other, standard initiating procedures would be fatal.

“What level of processing?” Rett kept his voice as uncaring as the man’s. There was no way in heaven or hell the Department intended to give him an operative to train who had retained memories of his life before.

Something about him being a special project, some kind of... perfection or something from one of those early drafts of Dowse, I think, and I didn't realize that meant that he was an operative without abilities.

Date: 2013-09-05 08:24 pm (UTC)Sketch met the boy in the waiting area for medical. They were both young then, maybe ten. She passed the time by tracing his likeness with one finger in the air before her.
He paid attention but couldn’t tell what she was doing.
Abruptly, she forced the threads she had sketched to resolve—a charcoal-colored sculpture of air.
He stared at it for a long moment, then reached out and touched the barely tangible threads. Golden light flowed from his fingertip and overlaid her work with radiance.
Sketch caught her breath.
He smiled. “You like it?”
She named him, “Lightsculpt.”

Date: 2013-09-09 01:50 am (UTC)Sketch had a new/old name—Anna Kirsch—her birth name, and a new address in Ariat Springs. She was free from the Department for the first time in her life.
At three months, the first letter arrived.
Lightsculpt’s team had chosen to stay. Their work was important, and Anna couldn’t fault him for it, but each week, she pounced on the envelope wearing his neat upright handwriting. He never told her about the battles, only the team members, their relationships, the happy moments, their hopes and dreams.
And every week, he signed it with his own, “I’ll see you soon.”

Date: 2013-09-09 02:16 am (UTC)Lightsculpt, like Cate, was voluntary. The whole team was because their leader had decided to stay and they followed suit.
Sketch escaped because her leader orchestrated their escape and the team managed to pull it off. It was their escape that actually allowed Cate's team to escape and made their staying upgrade the team status to voluntary.
I'm holding off on the Storm + Red prompt because it definitely ain't fluffy.
