I've been reading the delightful I Need My Fics offerings and just found this lovely quote in "Family. Duty. Honor." by in_the_blue, aka my beta Gwynne Jackson:

Family. It's what we are born to, but it's also what and whom we acquire along the way.

I'm so glad you liked that story. You know you want to read the books now, don't you? They're far from perfect, but I'll give you two reasons to pick up the first in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Game of Thrones: worldbuilding and characterization.

You've already had an introduction to two of my favorite characters. You'll meet more of them in the book, and get some background on why they're favorites. I would think George RR Martin's fantasy world would definitely appeal to you. It's got all the grand battles: good versus evil, natural versus supernatural, honesty versus dishonesty, escape versus capture, and more scheming than you can shake a stick at. He's actually quite a good writer. There's so much in there, the worlds are chock full of all manner of people and beasts and this and that, woven together tidily at least part of the time. He's created a huge sprawling world and of all people, I think you'd appreciate that.

Well, you've got the sax and violins part right. Alas.
