Fluff, Relationships, and Traditions

scribblemynameSo characters have habits, ways they interact with certain people and situations, things they do and like to do, stories and histories together. I've known a lot of my characters' for a long time but getting them all into fic is interesting, particularly for the ones I don't know that for.
I've got about five novelettes I want to turn out plus a short story, created out of the 5 Things Meme and then the whole Pieter/Ashen dynamic that originally played in my head before I even wrote that first Ashen drabble (and it is awesome to me, but got sidelined drastically with a deluge of other prompts), but, but, but...
I'm on day 265 of my challenge and story count 157 and I'm still plying angles and there's all those little things above that I'm itching to nibble at. Want to help a girl out?
Particularly of interest to me are things like where does Wesley work (not sure actually), and then relationship things that I haven't gotten to like how Justus always recognizes Shift regardless of her current form or demeanor, friendships, sibling relationships, Ilsa and her husband, etc.

Kingdoms and Thorn Ficlet: Remind You to Dance

She shrugged and curled up in her favorite wicker chair, then promptly evicted the cat trying to colonize her lap. "Down, Sophocles. Is your suspect going to do damage in the next ten minutes?"
He took that as a yes and opened the card. His eyebrows climbed higher as he read. Reservations for two to dinner at a high-class restaurant. "You hate dresses. You hate dancing." He looked up at her bored expression. "What am I missing?"
She rolled her eyes. "Your birthday."
It took him aback and he narrowed his gaze at the card again. His birthday. Justus hadn't celebrated any birthdays past his fifteenth. He had turned sixteen only a month or so after he and Red Wolf were taken. "We've been free for how long?" he asked finally, but he didn't look up from the card and that date printed on there neatly in small grey type.
Rachelle sighed and leaned forward in her chair. "I'm going to wear a dress I can stand and you won't change after work, and I'll remind me you of what it's like to dance without a target involved. Okay?"
Not an answer and certainly not a negotiation.
"Why?" What he really wanted to ask was why now.
She shook her head at him and stood, shedding her jean jacket and going to hang it up. "We're married now."
"That doesn't—"
She cut him over. "That does."
And she was Guardian, the sixteen-year-old woman who had walked in his room at the base and told him she was there to keep him from getting too attached, the seventeen-year-old who had healed him more times than was good for either of them, and finally the woman who hated him for falling in love with her, then stepped into his life and filled all the empty broken places he couldn't fill with anyone else. It made a difference. She had never taken no for an answer.
She moved into the kitchen and poured herself a cup of coffee out of the pot, then started doctoring it up as she always did.
"You hate dresses," he reminded her.
She nodded. "Sometimes I hate you too."
It startled him to hear her say that in present tense—again.
Guardian sipped her coffee, grimaced, and added a hint more cinnamon. She shrugged. "Sometimes I don't."

Of course, we all get tired and irritable, even with the people we love the most.

Date: 2013-10-01 11:24 pm (UTC)Their needs are so different and sometimes at odds, but she's got one thing straight about marriage and that's them being on the same page, so sometimes she hates their relationship and sometimes she doesn't. It's her and that's part of why she didn't shove him in the right direction for himself right away either. She kenw she would have to change just as much when he started to if she was tied to him. She was always happy to leave the conditioning to Shift until he screwed everything up by falling in love with her.
:shakes head: And that's not how I feel about it so much; that's how she feels about it. But she loves him at this ficlet point enough to marry him and more later. It's a progression.
