Fluff, Relationships, and Traditions

So characters have habits, ways they interact with certain people and situations, things they do and like to do, stories and histories together. I've known a lot of my characters' for a long time but getting them all into fic is interesting, particularly for the ones I don't know that for.
I've got about five novelettes I want to turn out plus a short story, created out of the 5 Things Meme and then the whole Pieter/Ashen dynamic that originally played in my head before I even wrote that first Ashen drabble (and it is awesome to me, but got sidelined drastically with a deluge of other prompts), but, but, but...
I'm on day 265 of my challenge and story count 157 and I'm still plying angles and there's all those little things above that I'm itching to nibble at. Want to help a girl out?
Particularly of interest to me are things like where does Wesley work (not sure actually), and then relationship things that I haven't gotten to like how Justus always recognizes Shift regardless of her current form or demeanor, friendships, sibling relationships, Ilsa and her husband, etc.
Calling for prompts, as promised:
- character(s) and/or canon/fandom
- random word, quote, or other prompt
Oh, and I'll try to keep it short and fluffy or sweet. Try is the operative word. :grins:

Kingdoms and Thorn Ficlet: What the Emptiness Fills
Date: 2013-10-03 10:15 pm (UTC)"You don't know?" Rachelle looked akin to mildly disgusted. "Why would he show up on your doorstep?"
Joseph tried very hard not to grind his teeth. "Because we're family."
She took a breath, then swallowed down some more coffee, shaking her head as she turned around to wash the cup. They were standing in her kitchen—Justus' kitchen. Hard to say, they were married and that in itself was still something strange for Joseph to figure out. They didn't act like an intimate couple or tender at all. Rachelle was nothing like the kind of woman Justus had always been interested in before he disappeared years ago with one of their friends.
Their finding him again was almost a fluke. Problem was, Justus had never forgotten anything. He could have contacted them at any time.
"You think we're not?" he asked tersely. Normally, he was the diplomatic brother, the nice one, but as Rachelle had told them bluntly herself, she was decidedly not nice.
"I think you don't have a clue," she bit back over her shoulder. She put her mug in to dry, then set about straightening up the detritus of coffee-making.
Joseph hadn't been there and she had, and it made him want to react in anger, but he made himself ask because he cared and if that was the only common ground they shared, then so be it, so his voice was softer than he wanted it to be when he said, "Then clue me in."
Rachelle's eyebrow came up, then leveled with the other one in an expression he couldn't quite read. "Some things run in the family," she murmured. "Justus loves his family. He wants a family. He still thinks you're the better man, did you know that?" Clearly, she disagreed.
He asked slowly, cautious because he didn't know what she was getting at, "Why would he think that?"
She made a small sound of derision. "Because you wouldn't have survived." And there, stark, was her irritation made plain.
It almost made him wince at the implications of guilt and hurt and her own struggle on his brother's behalf. But he didn't. Some things did run in the family and that stoic ability to soldier on that was so obvious in Justus was something taught to all their brothers and sisters. "I might have," he countered evenly.
One hand slid to her hip and Rachelle gave him a critical look. "Maybe." She paused, then shook her head. "You would have said no."
"No to what?"
"Shift." The word made little sense, but Rachelle didn't bother to explain it. "Justus knows a threat on sight, but you know goodness and at the time, she really didn't have any."
Shift was… a name? Joseph backed up, assessed her again. "So why wouldn't he come home because of that?" Again, cautiously worded and delivered.
Rachelle gave him an exasperated look. "Because he didn't belong to you any more and he couldn't stand it."
It didn't hit him for a moment and then it did. Hard. To not belong. "But—"
"No." She cut him over, voice hard. "He couldn't belong to you and live, so he didn't, but that's no reason to slam it in his own face when he could keep the memories of what he used to have. We played with knives, Joseph, but only because we had to."
It made him hurt. It made him want to hurt something. Rachelle left him for the living room to chivy the cat out of her favorite chair and he realized, almost startled, that she had left for him. He leaned his head back against the wall and tried to comprehend, tried to deal with this, because that street went both ways. The hurt that their family felt, wasn't it exactly the same thing? He wasn't theirs and they couldn't stand it.
And suddenly, the empty kitchen, devoid of anyone else, was painful but blessed relief.
