Fluff, Relationships, and Traditions

So characters have habits, ways they interact with certain people and situations, things they do and like to do, stories and histories together. I've known a lot of my characters' for a long time but getting them all into fic is interesting, particularly for the ones I don't know that for.
I've got about five novelettes I want to turn out plus a short story, created out of the 5 Things Meme and then the whole Pieter/Ashen dynamic that originally played in my head before I even wrote that first Ashen drabble (and it is awesome to me, but got sidelined drastically with a deluge of other prompts), but, but, but...
I'm on day 265 of my challenge and story count 157 and I'm still plying angles and there's all those little things above that I'm itching to nibble at. Want to help a girl out?
Particularly of interest to me are things like where does Wesley work (not sure actually), and then relationship things that I haven't gotten to like how Justus always recognizes Shift regardless of her current form or demeanor, friendships, sibling relationships, Ilsa and her husband, etc.
Calling for prompts, as promised:
- character(s) and/or canon/fandom
- random word, quote, or other prompt
Oh, and I'll try to keep it short and fluffy or sweet. Try is the operative word. :grins:
Prompts

239/365 – Kingdoms and Thorn Ficlet: Hard Decisions – 543 words
Date: 2013-10-29 10:30 pm (UTC)Midnight on the dark training courts and Storm kept on swinging—katas not for show, practiced combat maneuvers, the series of stretches and tumbles between each set of harder work. It was breathe and move and forget as his chains clanked and slid, number over handle engraved on the silver plates he wore around his neck.
She said little at first, just stood to the side in her customary battle-ready stance—one so many underestimated as simply standing—listening. Listen to the silence. Storm had heard her quiet undertone so often that now it played in his mind. Silence never lies. That she was listening to him now brought home to him that his instincts were not wrong, and somewhere inside it bothered him because he knew how high a price a leader paid for his team.
Slide, clank, metal against his shirt, harsh breath and muscles burning. Training long past time for operatives to take their rest. Training when others would call it counterproductive. And Whisper standing watch, and listening.
He halted abruptly, stood in the mode of waiting. He heard her whispers before he heard her voice, the sound of air molecules sliding in harsh lines.
"He'll live," she said, voice so quiet but so sharp it could cut.
Storm breathed. He walked forward with a steadiness that belied how bad his insides were shaking with overexertion. He stopped a foot away from her and looked down into those knowing brown eyes. They had been through everything together. She had been there every time he nearly died to save a team member. He had been there when she lost the Christian and killed every member of the terrorist cell responsible. She knew what he was going through now.
"Red doesn't deserve this," he said quietly.
Whisper shrugged. None of them had deserved this.
Red was new, an operative that should never have been, but so naturally skilled that it was uncanny, and his power could overcome any other they had ever encountered. He was a wolf, sensitive to the abilities of others and able to stop them. He was a natural leader, able to be tender or harsh as needed. Like Whisper, he was too intelligent to be led for long, but unlike Whisper, too willing to do what had to be done rather than let it lie.
Storm let out a breath. "It's always been a liability." For the team. Storm had always been willing to sacrifice, to push and protect instead of to buffer. It caused problems when admin knew how professional he could be but also how dangerous. Their entire team was orange-flagged because of him. They were considered a potential powder keg because if he would fight the Department openly, then why should they trust him to keep his people in line. He did keep them in line, but…
But.
Red was an opportunity Storm couldn't afford to pass up.
"You think I'm right?" he asked her softly.
Whisper's stance relaxed. She looked at him with the eyes of a friend instead of his second. "I know you are."
Storm set his jaw and went to haul Red out of bed. It was time for training.
