Dear Purim Gifts Author
Jan. 5th, 2015 12:09 pmDear Purim Gifts Author:
First, I shall begin by saying thank you for whatever you happen to write or create. I appreciate your gift because it is a gift.
I know only a little bit of Hebrew (got through one year, listen to Messianic music, and have a Hebrew Bible I muddle through while wishing I'd ever gone back to finish learning the language). If you work in Hebraic phrases, verses, etc. or longer with translation/footnotes, I will love it even if I'm anything but fluent, but sadly, it is not my native tongue.
General Please Don'ts: mpreg, lots of bodily fluids, oral sex, embarrassment of any kind, body-related humor, gore, excessive profanity, graphic violence, porn without plot (with plot, good to go), noncon, bashing, politics, controversial secular topics (whether it should be or not), deathfic.
General Please Do's: well-thought out crossovers (if you like), characterization, Jewish focus, women focus, and after that, pretty much anything goes. I love it all from fluff to humor to heavy angst. I would prefer canon-compliant to a total alternate universe, though I don't mind canon divergence.
If you need to ask questions about my taste, I recommend
in_the_blue.
I'm going to group my fandoms into a few categories:
Canonical Jewish Characters
תנ"ך | Tanakh
My favorite books before I discovered fiction were Ruth and Esther. They still rank very high up there. Since then, I've grown to love so many of the strong women throughout, like Deborah and Abigail and Rachel and lesser known ones. I also love Elijah and the minor prophets, especially Micaiah the son of Imlah. If you're inspired on any of these fronts, I'd love it.
Joseph - Terri L. Fivash
Biblical fiction based on Joseph that includes wonderful women and a rich tapestry of El Shaddai working in his life and through him. If you've read this, I'd take anything. Truly. The humor, the intrigue, the deep insights—I love it all.
The Brother's Keeper - Tracy Groot
What I love about this book is that it puts Jesus into his Jewish context by showing his very Jewish family. Thank you. He was a Jew. His family were Jews. There were people he grew up with who knew and loved him and what he taught in the context of that is astounding and this was the kind of book that bowled me straight over.
I'll take anything. The family. Either of his sisters. Nathanael's mother, Rivkah, when Jorah visits her to tell her about casting no stones. (I'd gladly take a fix-it for the character death.) Keturah who'd once been in unrequited love with Jesus. Her and James now. Anything at all.
Agent Carter (tv)
Eeeeee! Ana Jarvis is Jewish! If you've seen episode 3 of Agent Carter, may I please have her?
Could Have/Should Have Jewish Characters
The Unusuals
It's New York and they've got such an interesting cross-section here, why wouldn't/shouldn't one of them be Jewish? Best bet on my part would be Bridget, who talked about the significance of the number 42 like she came from a culture that actually thought about things like that, but frankly, I'm open to anyone you could feasible see as Jewish. Barring that, all the woman on this show are awesome and complicated and strong and I'd love to see more of any of them.
Firefly
I flat disbelieve that religious life would cease to exist in the future and I would love to see how Judaism came down here. Original or canon characters or any of the awesome women of Serenity welcome.
Leverage
I don't know why I always think Sophie should be Jewish, but I do. Again, if you disagree, feel free to write about any of the women being awesome. I love their backstories and skills and competence and complex relationships and am wide open.
Divergent Series - Veronica Roth
The Abnegation and Amity both clearly practice religions, but it's so sketched over. It's Chicago and there's no reason that religion wouldn't be Judaism. Can I see Tris or some other character growing up Jewish in this world? Johanna or Natalie coming into a Jewish household would also be lovely.
The People - Zenna Henderson
The God worshipped by the People is never explicated as the God of the Christians and not the Jews, and this world has always seemed to me quintessentially Jewish. The themes throughout it, the titles all strike me that way. I love all the women in this series, People and earthling alike. My favorite stories are "Captivity" and "Wildnerness," but I love the entire series and would take any of them.
Onyx Court series - Marie Brennan
Fairy London deserves Jews. Merchant of Venice was what started me thinking about how Jews really fit into the picture of society "back then" and I would love to read more of the Jewish side of fairy London. This is ripe for Jewish myth and legend.
Awesome Women Characters and/or Would Love to See Judaized
For these, I chose them for the women I love, but if you want to realistically make a character Jewish instead and focus on that, go for it. I recently fell gobsmackingly in love with a fic that showed Clint Barton from the Avengers as Jewish, so if you can make me believe it, I'm all in.
Awake (TV)
The women characters I particularly love are Dr. Evans, Hannah and Emma, and even Tricia Harper. They last three particularly are complex characters and were given a voice on both sides of reality, green and red. I'd love to see more about any of them, but especially hitting any of their struggles with the serious stuff playing out. I know a lot of people hate Tricia, but I saw so much struggle with her and trying to stop things from getting worse and they did, and so if you're willing to write her without writing her off as evil, I'd especially love that.
The Giver Series - Lois Lowry
Claire and Kira. I could write reams on either or both of them. Suffice to say, I love their strength and their unwavering identities.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
Jane Carter is the most seriously underused character ever in fanfic. She's amazing and lovely and strong and she hit the first guy she liked and she just lost another and she went toe to toe with an assassin and won and I love her. I just want more that's about her and not about someone else. Crossover potential: MCU as related to Peggy Carter.
Austin & Murry-O'Keefe Families - Madeleine L'Engle
Vicky Austin is another one of those characters I feel is underused and that I love. I love her calm, reflective strength and how much goes on inside of her. I love how she kythes, I love her relationships, I love her and the dolphins, I love her poetry. Can you work with that?
Roswell (TV)
Tess and Liz seemed remarkably able to commiserate before the train wreck that was prom and afterwards and I loved their little interchanges when they talked boys, destiny, etc. While I adore Maria and Isabel and certainly would be open to them if that's where you run, I really want to see more of these two. And can we just ignore everything after Viva Las Vegas?
Anne of Green Gables - L. M. Montgomery
I want more of Philippa Gordon. Seeing her in between the cracks around Anne's life was wonderful in the books, but her story of the boarding house and her jamborees and courtship and friend of the Japanese stationery all made me want more. If you're not comfortable with her, I'd love more of any of the girls post-Patty's Place conversing via letters or visits.
Agent Carter (TV)
Peggy is so incredibly competent and good at espionage. I love how she takes control, she's unafraid, even when she knows she's going up against hostile other agents, and the way she took out that guy in her apartment was amazing. I love how smart she is, how caring, how she hurts and it doesn't make her weak, and I love how she lets people go on underestimating her instead of worrying about what her coworkers think. I loved her and Colleen's banter at the beginning and how they cared about each other. I love her and Angie and their entire dynamic. I'd love to see inside Miriam's head about Peggy. I'll take any of these women please.
Would Love to See a Crossover For
Andromeda (TV)
I've always wanted to see this crossed over with Firefly, so Wash and Harper were related. If this is a primary match, I adore Beka and Trance and Rommie and would take any of them. The last episode I saw was "Dance of the Mayflies," so I'd appreciate sticking to canon before that.
Escape to Witch Mountain - Alexander Key
I have always wanted this crossed over with The People because if you read the two books, Ingathering and Escape to Witch Mountain, they could seriously be describing the same group of people. Alternatively, I'd love Tia-focused fic with her as a grown-up navigating the world with or without her voice or an AU where they didn't get away.
