Floating an idea just to see if this holds any interest for anyone but me. A lot of us fanficcers are original ficcers too and I don't know about you, but I am both

1) motivated by gift exchanges
2) more thrilled by fanfic than a review

Would anyone be interested in an exchange (time of year uncertain) where original ficcers could nominate any of their freely available (with coupon code or password fine) fiction or narrative poetry and then either write for it and/or receive fic for it?

I know there are a few folks I know who I love requesting fic of and love writing fic for their worlds. I was over the moon the two times I got fanfic written of my own stuff. I also accomplish far more original fiction when someone's prompting me.

Is this just me? Would anyone else be interested?

Hmm this is hard because I know a lot of us keep our original fic personas and fanfic personas seperate? That or are still in the query trenches and dont have much up and available. I mean, I've got short stories out in anthologies, but through companies so I couldn't give away free copies you know?

Fanfic could be a blast, but I just don't know how easy it would be to write fic for a short story.

(Hell, I'd even love reviews on our stuff honestly - it's tragically slim for both anthologies right now. Decent sales but no reviews.)

In a slightly similar vein - I am the mod of a SADLY mostly abandoned group I created for FakeTV casts so people could write fic for them. Few people ever participated though. It was a moderated group though since it was original and needed to be password/members only in case of eventual publishing.

Yeah, it's definitely possible. I just don't know how to make it work unfortunately.

True true. It would be a pain to end up feeling like you wasted that energy.

I've mostly been searching out sci-fi/fantasy lit mags or anthologies to try to submit to. Some of them have themes, and that makes it pretty easy to get my brain going.

I have only one original piece, which I never posted anywhere (it's ... ahem ... pretty much NC-17 and was a prezzie for my husband). I'd be willing to put it out there for people I trust to have a look at, but other than that, I still love writing fanfic for the time when I decide to attempt the Great Canadian Novel.

It seems like a very interesting idea to me. I mean, I don't do exchanges and I don't really have original worlds of my own and the couple times I tried original stuff for comment fic it didn't go so well, but I wouldn't mind having a good reason to show people original stuff especially if it was stuff they wanted to see in the first place.

(Also... if I made up background that will likely be inaccurate for Angie to fill that prompt from today is that okay because a line started in my head but they haven't told us much about her, so I'm sure I'll be wrong about what I was thinking.)

Oh, okay. Thanks.

Yeah, I can see that. I don't actually have a lot of original stuff to nominate because most of mine is unformed and unfinished.

I wonder if a friend I made on A03 would be interested. She's got a blog and I think she's got original fiction on it, so that might be something she'd be interested in doing. There are probably others who have that sort of thing, too, but I don't think I know any.

I have two shorts to my name, though I suppose with the way that one fic was trying to become all about the OCs, I could pull them out and make that a story of some kind maybe.

I'm not sure anyone would want to fic off my stuff, though. Shanachie did like the idea of giving Ragnar a love interest/partner so there's so interest there, I guess.

What about the people that gave you fanfic for your stuff already? Are they interested?

Oh. I guess I can see the difficulty. I didn't sign up for that other exchange because I didn't think I could do anything for others and wasn't sure I'd leave anything open for people to write for me. That might be very hard for people to do.

I just don't really have anywhere for original fic, so the idea was appealing.

I have nothing formally published in the world of original fiction. And anything that I would want people to write fanfic for is unfinished, alas...

It's a concept!

If original stuff isn't freely available, though, it'd have to go somewhere locked with very trustworthy participants, because the minute something's published in an open comm or blog (not just an excerpt, but the complete work), it becomes already published and not eligible for submission to most markets.

There are a bunch of ways this could be done. It's a really interesting idea.
