First Ficlet O'Clock of the New Year
Jan. 28th, 2015 07:59 amSo I've been itching to do this, and I still can't figure out where my computer drivers made off to, so I have no especial reason to keep my brain ready for collab tonight because it's not going to happen.
I'm opening a ficlet o'clock for fandom or original fiction. Give me:

Date: 2015-01-28 08:21 pm (UTC)The first time Casal held power within her hands, it glowed with the brilliant radiance of her people's legacy. She was kahtchen, gifted, and she could influence electricity and clomen, the basis of their power, with a thought.
To the plain of Vardin, the people without gifts, this is power: to hold the radiance in her hand and make it do her bidding.
The first time Casal wielded the power of her Household, the nobles of the royal house fell silent before her words as she impressed upon her Queen the importance of what she had discovered, a breach upon the Barrier around Vardin that kept outsider out and the gifteds within. She spoke with the authority of the kahtchen and she raised her chin to the plain.
To the plain of Vardin, the people without bonds, this is power: to speak and be heard, to command and be obeyed.
The first time Casal understood power was between the two, the day she lowered her neck to the Queen's hand and felt the bond between the Queen's authority and Casal's own radiance. Another hand took hold of the authority over electricity and clomen within her blood. Another claimed authority over Casal and granted authority over the plain of Casal's Household.
It felt as though a storm took hold of her power and sought to press it out from every pore and slope of skin. Casal gritted her teeth and held on through the fierce pressure, the integration of another's will with access to her gift, and held the radiance inside the flesh that could barely contain it.
She was bound. The Queen released her neck, and the pressure eased. Casal stood and returned to the ranks of her own.
This was power, that none could take what she had not given, that under all pain, she was master of herself.

The 3K Fics I'd Write If I Had the Time
Date: 2015-01-28 08:25 pm (UTC)Vardin: Casal serves on a particular watch and during a battle ends up the last resort, the one they call the tide-changer. She has to use the full extent of her powers and gifts and make some pretty far-reaching terrible decisions about the ramifications of using them in order to save her people.
