Sunshine

Kingdoms and Thorn Drabble: This is How You Hear Your Name

"Sunshine," Whisper said softly, too low for the baby across the room in her crib to hear, but Sunshine's wispy head turned anyway at her mother's call.

Red Wolf watched, waited for what it was Whisper was trying to show him.

After a long moment, Sunshine lost interest and turned back to her teddy bear and patting its little jacket.

Whisper looked at him and said almost painfully loud, "She can't hear me, Wolf."

He looked over. Sunshine hadn't even noticed. "She responded," he breathed. The first time.

"To intention."

Something sensed by Whisper's ability, his... Sunshine's.

He reeled. Deaf.
