Yuletide Rec: the treat I never saw coming
Jan. 6th, 2015 03:30 pmSo I expressed offhand in a Yuletide thread that I wished more than one of my fandoms had gotten fic written for it, and

Relationships: Scarlett O'Connor/Liam McGuinnis
Characters: Scarlett O'Connor, Liam McGuinnis
Summary:
Liam, experiencing jetlag in the middle of the night while coming to work with a new band, notices a google alert for a video of Scarlett taking the stage at Winterfest. And he never did get around to getting rid of her phone number.
My review, because it covers what I felt about this fic better than I can reword:
I feel like nothing I could say would do justice to this piece. My first reaction was wow, it's up to the current canon, it fits where we're at, it's real, it's plausible, and more, it's soooo Liam. You captured his voice perfectly. I can hear his denial even when he doesn't admit it and then the stuff he's honest about, his coping mechanisms hiding problematic feelings away where they don't hurt as he drowned it all in work and busyness, then Scarlett. It was her voice too. She sounded just like herself coming off that high and faced with someone unexpected with all this hope for the future in that one little stated open doorway.
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love this fic. I love this pairing and how well you snuck this into canon in the future, where they could go from here.
Thank you so, so much!
In addition to Yuletide, I participated in the Be Compromised Secret Santa for the Clint/Natasha pairing. I received a beautiful gift from

Relationships: Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov
Characters: Clint Barton, Natasha Romanov, Phil Coulson
Additional Tags: Friends With Benefits, First Meetings, Friends to Lovers
Summary:
The first time doesn't really count for either of them. They don't glorify it in hindsight or put more into it than what it was: playing with fire, slowly dragging your hand over a flame you know could burn you alive.
Clint and Natasha get to know each other in the biblical sense the first time they meet and don’t catch feelings until later.
This fic, this fic. I don't know how to be articulate about it, but I shall try. This is a fic that counts up the beats of a relationship by milestones real and expected and notes the differences between the two. There's transitions with adorable sidenotes of outsider POV and how Natasha tells the story (truthfully and otherwise) and how Clint does (the same), and it's hot and sweet and lovely and deep and go read it.

He demanded leverage. She gave it. She let him claim her and her child legally in the form of marriage and adoption papers. That was the bargain - not affection.
My fic for the Secret Santa did not come easily, but when it did come, I saw I was going to run waaaay over when I was still about 4K in and did what I had to in order to rein it in before disaster. Did not help I was writing through the night on the literal last day before an auto-default. I'm going to have to come back to this one. I got it to a stopping point but I really can't say I finished what I wanted to say.
So it's a baby fic, but it's not fluffy, it's only mildly domestic; it's really about a skittish untrusting marriage of convenience between Hawkeye and the Black Widow because he won't kill her unborn child (SHIELD orders aside) and so recruitment's the only option left. Do you know how hard it was to make this premise believable? But it got inside my head and wouldn't let go, so I had to.

Yuletide 2014 Restrospective
Jan. 1st, 2015 10:07 amSo onto Yuletide.

FIC REVEAL
Then there's what I wrote. I was pretty careful in my sign-up because there were certain things I really, really wanted to write, and no bucket list this year. I wanted to be smart and write the stuff I knew I wanted to scribble in.
My assignment was
Keep Us Sane (1087 words) by scribblemyname
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Unusuals
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Casey Shraeger & Jason Walsh, Allison Beaumont/Jason Walsh, Davis Nixon/Casey Shraeger
Characters: Casey Shraeger, Jason Walsh, Allison Beaumont, Davis Nixon
Additional Tags: Yuletide, established relationships - Freeform, Christmas, partners, Friendship, Some Innuendo and Sexual Implications, Secrets, Jason Walsh Can't Cook, Gratuitous Coffee Drinking, Misses Clause Challenge
Summary:
Shraeger doesn't worry about Walsh's secrets any more, but sometimes they itch, just because he still shoots her that smug grin when she can't guess them.
I wanted so badly to write for The Unusuals that I'm still over the moon about it. I didn't write epic, just dug into the little prompt about Walsh and Shraeger's platonic partner relationship with a side of Beaumont and personal boundaries. In short, just exactly what I wanted to write. The rest of the cast thrill and delight me and I definitely volunteered for any, but I've really had a hankering to write these three characters in particular with a prompt in mind.
There was the question in my recipient's letter if they ever got asked if they slept together because Walsh does have a history of sleeping with a coworker (and Allison did hear that tiny little issue of, ahem, coworker from Brown in the episode where she got shot and everyone found out, so not insignificant). That question ended up dominating more of the fic than I intended, but it also gave me room to explore a bit more of how they really do view each other (platonically) and gave me a great excuse for a Davis/Casey scene. I'm determined to write for both pairings in the couples big bang (in one fic, I'm not insane).

Next, we come to my first pinch hit, which I picked up purely because I love Vienna Teng's lyrics, not because I realized there were actual stories behind her songs.
Now You See Her (1087 words) by Remember When
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Homecoming (Walter's Song) - Vienna Teng (Song), Shasta (Carrie's Song) - Vienna Teng (Song), Whatever You Want - Vienna Teng (Song)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Walter/Carrie (Vienna Teng)
Characters: Walter (Vienna Teng), Carrie (Vienna Teng), Anna Rose (Vienna Teng), The Wife (Whatever You Want - Vienna Teng)
Additional Tags: Absolution, Character Study, Forgiveness, Making things right, Reconciliation, break-up, Romance, Separation, Small Towns, on the road, whistleblower
Summary:
You do not wonder why you can never go home, but you wonder why it seems to follow you, all the mistakes you ever made.
This was seriously a case of just digging into the lyrics and figuring out who I thought everyone was. Walter's song and Carrie's song were obvious and Teng said that Walter was the ex-boyfriend of Carrie's situation, so readymade there. Then I hit "Whatever You Want," a tale of two named parties an extra or joint voice serving as narrator who take down a corrupt businessman. I decided the guy was Walter and ran from there.
CREDITS: I had to reach out to someone new for a beta because when possible, I prefer to get fandom-specific help.
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
My second pinch hit was probably my worst idea ever, not because I didn't have a great idea for the prompt, but because I got waaay too ambitious and had a hard time making it come together.

Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Endgame (TV)

Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Arkady Ballagan & Alcina Albeniz, Sam Besht/Danni
Characters: Arkady Balagan, Alcina Albeniz, Sam Besht, Danni (Endgame), Hugo Lum, Pippa Venturi
Additional Tags: Friends to Lovers, Matchmaking, Shameless Meddling, Friendship, Found Family, Mistletoe, Christmas, lots of fluff, a little bit of angst, Humor
Summary:
Pippa slipped in just as Alcina was slipping out and exchanged smiles with the cleaning lady before addressing Arkady. "What's with all the mistletoe? Some creep tried to kiss me as I came in."
Arkady thinks Sam needs a Christmas kiss and he knows just who should give it to him.
Thankfully, my recipient liked this fic! I love her for overlooking the transitions that aren't nearly as smooth as my usual because all in all it was a fun little piece and I included the match not just the matchmaking and I like how it came out.
But getting there!
Bears, bears, bears, bemoaning, patient beta is patient (and never got a chance to beta it because I kept writing treats when the fic wasn't cooperating and...), patient beta is awesome.
I ended up having to watch the last episode of the series again to write this and veered sharply toward a character I wasn't intending to give a large role and had a lot more sillyness and less Danni/Sam than planned, but recipient is pleased so I am too.

Summary:
You don't ask about someone else's form. It's not done—even when you're in a covert operations organization where your alternate skillset might come seriously in handy.
I am ridiculously proud of this fic despite the tropey premise because it just turned out so well. It wasn't by any means one of my more popular Yuletide fics, but it was focused on Jane with a hefty side-dish of Will and a betting pool! (I love betting pools) and practically wrote itself. I thought I was writing a drabble. Two scenes in I figured out I wasn't, and when it was over, I had basically 3000 words and I want to write more. I think this was my favorite of what I wrote in terms of my own reading taste, though I haven't the foggiest why.
CREDITS: My amazing wonderful usual beta came through like no tomorrow for this and the next treat.
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
The next treat almost didn't happen and it was my dark horse. My recipient loved it and spread the word. It's my most responded to fic in Yuletide.

A dragon-worthy, fannish love of Better Hoards and Lairs.
I knew I wanted to get into dragon's attitudes toward hoards, but I didn't know who I was writing about until they started interacting and I really wasn't expecting curtainfic and married life. I liked how it turned out though and thankfully, so did the recipient.

My last assigned pinch hit. I kept hunting the prompts that came through (despite a full plate, I hadn't finished the Endgame fic yet), and when I saw this one, I just snagged it. Avery and Juliette, I could write in my sleep and really, really wanted to. I LOVE this pairing.

My half a pinch hit. Seriously, her likes made me think of space AUs and artificial intelligence and then platonic soulbonds? Who better than Hawkeye and Hawkeye? This was shockingly easy to write and I do want to visit for more.
As for the Madness collection, I wrote a Gotham treat, then 30 drabbles in multiple fandoms. To make life easy, the drabbles are in a series.

On Writing and the Scribbler
Nov. 12th, 2014 08:18 amFor health reasons, I'm dropping the NanoWrimo deadline for myself, though I still have various Christmas scribblings I intend to do and the book is still on my plate.
Lisea has surprised me. I keep trying to talk her out of where she just went, but she's going there with or without me, so I finally decided to just let her go and hang on for the ride. My girls are talking to me, and that excites me.
Additionally, I've finally gotten my first December fic figured out, if not written quite yet, and I have done some drabble treats for Yuletide. I'd like to triple the count I have, but we'll see. Assignments should come first. But I love drabbling and comment-ficcing or I wouldn't hang out at the LiveJournal Comment Fic Community so much, so... :shrugs: I'll always snuggle tiny fics between the cracks I think.
I will still track the November novel's numbers on Nano until end of November, just to see what happens.
Today, I have some reviews to catch up on and Lisea to follow. Happy writing!

Dear Yuletide Writer
Oct. 19th, 2014 10:56 amThis year, I'm keeping my requests to the fandoms and/or fics I probably can't get written anywhere else. I would love you for any of these, and some I'm the only person in the fandom that I can tell. I would love you for any of these.
Links to my profiles on other sites are in the header on this page. If you want to ask questions of a writing buddy/best friend of mine, I recommend
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
The Kinds of Fic I Love: I have especially near and dear to my heart kinds of stories, and I admit to leaning heavily literary/poetic.
- I love deep delving into characters and relationships, not just romantic relationships, but familial relationships and deep friendships. I always want to know more about the bond and the interaction, the intimacy (romantic or otherwise), and the best sex is that which characterizes and makes me know the characters more and better. In that vein, I love romantic, intimate sex, but I'm just as likely to love friendship and asexuality that allows more delving into character headspace, and big sprawling families or intense focus on one relationship within a family hit all my sweet spots. Some of my favorite fics are genfic for that reason.
- I also love beautiful language and layers of meaning packed into a single scene. It's definitely not a requirement, as I can fluff and humor with the best of them, but I do adore being able to read more between the lines and see worlds of meaning and layers of implied history seeping between the seams of a story. The more you can immerse me, the more I will absolutely love you.
- This is probably a big part of why I love parallel/backstory and slow build stories where I get to see a lot of different parts of a developing relationship/character arc. Getting to see how different points in a longer timeline all feed into one emotional resolution is so compelling to me. Most of my favorite fics give a longer view than just one moment in time. (Though yes, I love those too. I'm easy to please.)
- Also, worldbuilding. That thing about immersion? Yes, please. I want to drop smack in the middle of your feels and ideas and impressions of the world. Generally, I want to know more about the world in a greater sense: how it feels, how it works, how the characters interact or are situated within it, how it affects them—just more. You cannot go wrong by giving me more of the world of the story.
Things I Do Not Love/Please Avoid Writing This For Me:
- tragedy
- deathfic (I will love your deathfic and I will weep and I will hate that I read it and and loved it and wept)
- bloodplay
- oral sex
- bodily fluids (as focus/play)
- mpreg
- breakup of canonical pairings
- ageplay
- underage
- noncon
- dubcon (with few exceptions)
- embarrassment at all
- body-related humor
- bashing (whether that be character, political, religious, etc.)
- out of character
- characters reflecting on how out of character they are acting because romance changes them
- romance changing a character
- any relationship changing a character (I love seeing how a character can be themselves and grow, expand, deal with a relationship as themselves)
- incompetence
- unhappy endings or implied unhappy endings (ambiguous but satisfying and/or status quo endings fine)
- gore
- gratuitous violence
- porn without plot (with plot/heavy characterization is awesome)
- most sex-related slang (squicky much)
- most dirty talk (I actually love it but not with a lot of that slang, so don't name body parts?)
- uncensored profanity
Razor Sharp (2006)
Canon: On Vimeo, and the entire movie is a little less than half an hour long. It does not take long to watch, is super fun, and has an amazingly awesome cast. There's a grifter with a thing for Macy's (Cassidy Freeman before Smallville), her Russian tech guy who used to work with her dad, a kid hacker, and Michael T. Weiss from The Pretender being awesome at cheesy, sleazy guy handing out the job. You like funny, offbeat, and adventure/action? This is sooo it. The cast is awesome and the movie is awesome. And the dialogue is hilarious.
Yes Please: I really have a hankering for chosen family fic with Isis settling into the family dynamic. I'd love to keep the humor and banged up nature of their operation and see more of the worldbuilding between the chinks of the short movie. Tech love, hacker shenanigans, mission fic, and backstory/continuing story all super, super welcome. Awesome dialogue would be my number one wish though. I don't write it half as well as the writer of Razor Sharp and I just LOVED the style of humor in here. Wouldn't mind a crossover with Leverage if that makes it easier to write, as it's a world of grifters, so yeah, but if that's not helpful, no problem.
No Thank You: Please no body-related humor or embarrassment as both squick me something awful. Also please no consent issues or blackmail on any front, gore, gratuitous violence, or profanity. Censored profanity okay.
Nashville (TV)
Canon: Three seasons and takes a while to watch if you haven't seen it already. I picked it up on Hulu Plus because 1) awesome music and 2) Hayden Panettiere and got totally sucked in. I'm telling you, it's all about the characters, which are three dimensional people with knotty, complex relationships and backstories going on. The relevant part to my requested pairing is in season 2 and especially inspired by "They Don't Make 'Em Like Daddy Anymore."
Yes Please: Liam McGuinnis/Scarlett O'Connor is a pairing that snuck up on me and didn't sell me until that episode and the following one where Rayna orders Liam to break it off. What really got me was that for once someone gave something to Liam and opened up something in him where he was always the one doing that for everyone else and the comment about he didn't have anyone waiting for him, then she looked at his lyrics, and just yes, yes, yes. I would love to see this explored. An AU where they get together or futurefic or even just the missing scene where she's looking at his lyrics and seeing that connection, though I admit, I want something more romantic.
I'm seriously looking for intimacy and connection and characterization here and would love some of that offscreen Liam stuff you don't see. I think Scarlett opened up something more vulnerable in him that no one else got to because he kept the walls up with them and he didn't need them with her after that one point, so yeah. That.
No Thank You: Please no porn without plot (with plot, I'm all over it), oral sex, embarrassment, unhappy endings, crack or overly humorous fic here.
The Lesson - Billy Collins (poem)
Canon: This poem is available free online here. I love the character of History with queens in the pockets of his coat that might fall out and the whole idea of how he visited the narrator and seriously, about that coat...
Yes Please: I want to know more about History and his personal effects and how that coat works and how he carries history/historical figures with him and more lighthearted stuff and/or why he was visiting the narrator and who the narrator is. Meta and experimental fic also welcome.
No Thanks: Deeply angsty/tragic stuff, romance, sex, embarrassment, bashing of any variety, current political issues.
Doppelganger series — Marie Brennan
Canon: The original duology is here and should definitely be read as a set. The prequel is free online at Beneath Ceaseless Skies and is equally amazing and wonderful and stands alone. Dancers and warriors and magic and deep characterization and ethical issues and serious study of said magic and engaged deity and all of it, just yes, please.
Yes Please: I am fascinated by the entire new focus the Void ray is going to be taking on moving forward and how to incorporate this whole new aspect of Starfall's culture. I want a post-duology story where the newly merged Naspeth-Urishin (preferably with a name) interacts with Mirei, where we see the new aspects to the Void ray or more research into Void magic, especially with Mirei, but also will take Naspeth-Urishin, Satomi, any of them really. I'm into the worldbuilding here and how this affects everything.
And please more of the Starfall hunting school and the interaction among Mirei, Eclipse, and Jaguar regarding it (I adored his claim on half of Mirei at the end of the second book). How this all works together with raising the girls together just fascinates me.
Alternatively, I LOVE the Mirei/Eclipse pairing and want more, more, more—characterization, intimacy, working out new boundaries, sorting out history from present relationship, adult situations yes please, and them working together at Starfall. More about Sen and Kerestel's history between Dancing the Warrior and the books would also be welcome.
No, Thank You: Politics please! The books are heavy on politics because they need to be, but that's why I'm not that interested in reading more about the politics. I'm really interested in the cultural shift and the worldbuilding and the characters and the Void power and how things work under the surface. So yeah. Also, please no gore or gratuitous violence or profanity.
Again, thank you so much!
Love,
the scribbler
Pre-Nano Thoughts
Oct. 17th, 2014 08:01 amI broke down and watched The Voice like Dean Wesley Smith has been telling writers to do for years now. The interesting thing about it is after I wrote down the writing lessons I picked up from it, I wandered back through my email archives looking for a manuscript I'd emailed myself and discovered some things that my beta taught me and they ran along similar lines.
The Voice: Go all in. Lay everything out there. Lose yourself in the moment.
in_the_blue: Get down and dirty and write it all out.
The Voice: Overfeel, not overthink. Own the moment.
in_the_blue: Don't apologize.
In short, it took me this long to get a handle on what in_the_blue was actually telling me. There is one story that was her favorite of the Vardin shorts I wrote before I did the 365 challenge (which was a nightmare for my novel-writing skills apparently, though it did wonders for my shorts), and that was Portrait of a Butterfly. She told me it was unapologetic for the characters and their motivations and the hierarchy of Vardin came alive and took over.
I'd like a whole lot more of that, where something I wrote without trying to cater it to the uninitiated came together in a way that came alive.
There is a simple concept so intrinsic and fundamental to Vardin society and its root cultures that I only now, upon rereading all three stories in Gone Hunting, realized I have yet to convey it in writing anywhere and that it is such a fundamental law, tradition, societal code, and aspect of who they are that it is the basis of many of my characters' decisions there, including Rhiannon and Miraia, another whose family's reaction to her marital choices puzzled the one person I bounced them off of.
That code is this: outsiders must become family before they are trusted with the knowledge of the gifteds or are considered members of Vardin society. They must have what is called 'cahnten,' an inner circle of friends and family by whom any Vardin individual is measured.
Outsiders can become insiders and are given very specific avenues into how to do so, but Vardin's is an insular culture, so anyone who does not become an insider is neither trusted as one nor treated as one. This particular rule came out of life and death wars and slaughters in their history where too many died over this issue for their people to ever take it lightly.
As a side note, they don't consider mindreading an alternative as mental gifts are to be used on others with permission where possible, with knowledge and open communication where impossible, and by force only in life or death situations and war. Rhiannon wasn't at war.
Miraia broke the rules at a whole different level: she married a man and refused to make him a "son" of her household. In short, she refused to make him family and an insider. She had reasons, but that's not the part that puzzled the one I was talking to. The family's reaction was entirely overkill by our cultural standards. She had just broken a law that would result in her being disowned or worse and talked them into exacting a blood debt instead as if she had killed a son of the house.
It only makes sense in the context of a culture with intense insider/outsider rules for leaving, entering, or crossing those lines. It doesn't make sense in a culture that is simply protecting a secret. It only makes sense in a culture that is a secret.
I have three different writerly skillsets and intense practice of one makes it very hard to slip into another apparently. I write poetry, I write shorts, and I write long chaptered fiction. I can mix up the first two fairly easily, but the last two don't get along so well. I used to write a ton of chaptered work and kept on it too, then my life blew up and I switched to shorts as a temporary thing to keep in writing practice. Didn't work. Why? I had a very hard time writing chapters after that. After a second life blow up, I almost lost the ability altogether.
At least I get that now and have an idea of how I'm going to approach Nano. I suggest, thecatisacritic, that you don't read my Nano posts because I am going to be yakking about how I work this project for my own personal information in the years ahead, and you've already told me you don't want to know about it if anything goes wrong. So heads up.
This rambly post brought to you by "I felt like writing out my pre-Nano/Yuletide/trovia's gift/collab wrap-up" feelings. Hope I didn't bore you too badly.
:grins:
First Nano prep post coming soon.
