I'm trying really hard to be okay.

I saved religiously yesterday and just discovered that all my work from yesterday is simply gone. That's more than 1000 words of "Dowse and Bleed," my second favorite poem I've ever written, and various edits and snippets that were good. This had nothing to do with not backing things up. Word just didn't save any of the changes, so the backup I sent myself had none of it either.

I'm trying not to cry over the poem. It was perfect. I loved it. And while the material in "Dowse and Bleed" was hugely significant and well done, I'm on the rewrite anyway, I'll survive the loss. But the poem...

ETA: I love the IT guys. They rescued my poem. Not the rest of the stuff, but like I said, that I can live without. It was the poem.

Thank you. It was devastating and I admit to not working on "Dowse and Bleed" at all today. It was too hard to imagine rewriting that work from scratch just yet, but I'm soooo grateful for the poem. Prose can be reworded without too much loss of quality. Poetry... Not the same at all.

I am sorry you lost all that work. It can be devastating to lose a bit of writing, no matter how small it might be. I am still mourning a notebook that had my only notes for a story that I used for a college assignment and never got back.

At least you were able to get back the poem that meant so much to you and mattered the most. I'm glad they were able to help you recover it.

Thank you. It was hard, very, very hard, and I wasn't ready to face the story from inferno again just yet, but I am sooo grateful they got the poem back. I didn't even have the heart to TRY to reconstruct that. I still can't believe it's 86 lines long.

Yeah, I had a panic attack shortly before I left home because I meant to save as and didn't, and I thought I was about to override at least 3,000 words of my latest serial, and the idea of not being able to recover that is just... horrifying. Fortunately, dropbox called it a conflicted version and left the other one alone, so yay.

But I still can't recover that notebook from all that time ago. I can't even remember enough of the idea to come close to it, so that one is gone for good, I guess.

It's so good that they were able to help you get back the poem. It would have been better if you could get them all, and I'm sorry you lost more of Dowse and Bleed, but I'm glad you got the poem because it means so much to you.

Nothing sucks more than losing writing. Nothing. A million years ago, when I worked at a typesetting firm, we had a saying about losing our work which was that it was easier the second time around. I'm not so sure with creative work that holds true. We can come close, but we can't ever recreate exactly.

I'm so glad you got your poem back. Did the IT guys have any clue about what it was that kept all that religious saving from actually working?

It is hard. I'm so happy to have my poem that I saved in four different places and triple emailed it to myself. Not losing that one again!
