This entry is part 23 of 23 in the series Daily Scribble Reports

So playing total catch-up here (I know, I know). On Thursday, I managed to write some at the end in the Justus POV fic of "Its Own Absolution" due to a wonderful antagonists prompt from in_the_blue. It gave me a good headstart. I percolated a lot on Sabbath about it, but didn't turn that sketch into fic until Sunday, and awkward fic at that.

Somewhere in there, I also sketched down some other stuff and have started to rethink my approach to this collaboration. I need something that doesn't fit easily into worldbuilding I've already done for any other story. It's not fair to thecatisacritic.

Also, trovia got me off on an amazing Avengers fanfic novel (I'm a sucker for brothers), so there's that. It took time to read and was good for when I was feeling totally bleh on the mental front.

I liked Early Edition.

I don't like precognition, though. I really don't. God is the only one who has the ability to accurately prophesy, and I'm not comfortable with humans doing it even in fiction.

I do like the estranged friends reuniting, though.

He relayed it through his prophets, but that didn't make the prophets the ones that knew. Most of them didn't, and some of them died hundreds of years before the prophecies were fulfilled.

I like intuition. Plenty of my characters have good intuition. I just don't like the prediction thing. It bothers me.

I know we're going to need a scientific reason for me, too. I have to have that clarity because there are so many lines that I've drawn that I won't cross that are rather... tangled and convoluted.

I based Recall's strange leaps of logic on the things she carries in her head from all those peoples' memories and her training/experience as an agent. Most of my characters with intuition are agents/operatives/had to learn the hard way how people will act because they were in bad situations growing up, but that just gave them a sense of things going bad or knowing that people are up to no good when they approach, that sort of thing.

I don't like the idea of them being able to predict the exact circumstances or scenarios. That goes too close to one of those lines of mine.

Yeah... I have a very long list of things I don't touch with the ten-foot pole, and that ten foot pole usually includes the implication of those things as well.

Mine does include most of those you listed off. I don't do mediums, vampires, or were-creatures, either. There's also magic, witches/wizards, prophecy, precognition, psychics (though I have watched shows where there were acknowledged fraudulent psychics like Psych and Mentalist,) destiny/fate, and demons...

And a lot of other things, too.

Like I said, my lines are convoluted.

Sounds almost like Stargate Atlantis' wraiths to me, and I was willing to watch that, at least for a while.

Psychics always seemed to me to get visions, and it was the source of the visions (like mediums) that bothered me, and as for telepaths...

I have been thinking for a long time that I shouldn't have anything to do with them. I've had a hard time sticking to that line, but part of the reason I didn't give many prompts for Cate was because she was a telepath (and yet I ended up crossing Recall with Special Unit, so you can see I'm not good about that line. It doesn't help that I liked Jean Grey and other telepaths before I tried to be more faithful and cut the inappropriate things out of my life.)

It depends.

Sometimes I know from the beginning where the whole thing is going, and sometimes I just know a part of it. Sometimes I know next to nothing. Every story changes on me during the writing, so I don't do too much advance planning because that never seems to work for me. I'll get ideas of what should happen that can't because of what a character does, and then I have a freak out and abandon stories because I can't reconcile them...

I tend to get a slight sense of the characters and start building from there when I know enough to write about them.

I have had this thought in the back of my head for a while, something I never developed into anything more, but it was about a couple... She was in love with him and told him, but he didn't love her, so he moved away to spare her and there was a conversation between him and his friend as they drove back to his hometown about why he'd never asked her for any favors even though she had a successful business (computers, maybe?) that could have given him the answers he wanted years ago.

That doesn't have to be what draws them back together this time. I've done it with a death before, the mentor figure died and the funeral brought the other one home...

Just some thoughts/possibilities.

Probably should figure out what the special ability is first. Something like that is kind of... important to who a person is, and if it's touch based they'd have different ways of reacting than if it's thought or otherwise.

Did we decide why they're coming back together? And are we starting at the point of reunion... or should we look at why they got estranged?

I am willing to start. I think. I might regret that, though.

I've generally worked the opposite way with special abilities. I didn't get a sense of Recall until I knew she pulled memories, and Cress being water is a huge part of who he is.

Okay. How many characters are we playing around with here? Are we possibly dealing with a family returning (possibly brother/sister or brother/brother) to rejoin the former friends?

This doesn't answer why they're headed back, and it's not fully formed, but this did come to me. Not sure what to do with it, but you can see it anyway...

“You planning on speaking at all during this drive?”

Not looking up from his book, he gave a slight shake of his head. Talking wasn’t on the list of things that had to be done today, and he was sticking to the list. Organization kept him sane, even if his lists annoyed everyone else he knew.

“You know you’ll have to talk sometime today. You can’t avoid it all day.”

That got a glance toward the mirror, meeting the eyes waiting for his response, but he shook his head, returning to the book. He could avoid it for the day, could avoid it for a lot longer if he wanted, and that might be what he chose to do for the duration of this trip.

“You are not going to spend the entire week not talking to any of us.”

He lifted the book, tempted to let it do the talking for him. Aimed properly, it would even stop the car, keeping them from reaching the destination he had no desire to see again.

“You’re not a child. Don’t act like one.”

He closed his eyes. Silence was still the preferable response. He could keep himself from reacting for a while longer, but if he was pushed, if he was provoked—he started down the list of things that calmed him, fulfilling each as he did.

“Leave him alone. We don’t need to lose the car—and I would like to get there alive.”

“It’s not that bad.”

He lost his place in the list, and then he lost his book. He studied his empty hands for a moment before kicking the front seat. “I hate both of you. You know that, don’t you?”

“Little brother is mad.”

“Yes, but little brother is talking again.”

“You didn’t have to push. Not everyone needs to talk.”

“And letting him glower is better?”

“I was not glowering. I was reading. Now I don’t have a book, and now I’m glowering.”

Ah, another question to ask:

Is this a separate world? Is it like Earth/modern society if it is?
