First we have the marvelous domestic Jarvis household on Agent Carter with a side helping of Peggy headbanging against the density of certain male skulls and Anna serving a small but significant role in cluing said dense skulls in. It's delightful. It's married UST and finally some RST and lots of Jewishness and cuteness and it's just so perfect.

Man, Wife, and Slinky Dress for Space Swap

So for [livejournal.com profile] space_swap, I wrote Firefly and quickly realized anew the pain of forging into a new fandom/pairing and trying to sound like it's not your first fic for them. Honestly, I don't think I rose above it, but it was fun to write anyway.

I did the canon review thing and watched "Shindig" and wanted to know more about the slinky dress, so just wrote about Wash, Zoe, and a slinky dress.

So for [livejournal.com profile] shipswap, I wrote an assignment, a treat for my recipient because I really wanted to write both prompts, and a pinch hit.

Coffee with a Side of Romance for Ship Swap

I have this work in progress for a coffee shop/prostitute AU inspired by my Trope Bingo card for The Unusuals with a sketch that actually makes me want to write more, and their prompt about Beaumont and Walsh's relationship, the casual trust and her being more in control and liking AUs and developing relationship just kind of prompted me to write how the two came together in this little offshoot world of mine where she's still a cop, but Walsh is really just runs the diner.

I had fun with it and recip liked, so yay. Beta'ed by the awesome [livejournal.com profile] hiddencait.

Jason can't cook and his coffee is swill, but he looks at her exactly the same as any other competent, able person with a job to do and calls her "Detective."

Sometimes that's exactly what Allison needs.

Safe Space for Ship Swap

So my recipient also liked Clint/Bucky gen or paired as bonding over being snipers and friends with Natasha and this piece and all she prompted about it just kept building up in my percolating muse until this piece spilled out.

I wrote a paragraph to introduce and it wasn't enough. I wrote it again, building on it, and I let his memories and feelings just layer over one on top of the other, and it was poetry and repetition and experimental and I knew perfectly well it wasn't everyone's cuppa, but it was me, all me and what I love about writing and bringing disparate threads together and how Natasha forged this bond between the two men even in absence and how she goes neatly behind Steve's back while never lying and takes care of someone who used to take care of her and there are secrets here and history and it's written between the lines and this is why I write.

:le sigh: I really am a literary writer at heart.

The Rule Where Falling Asleep Isn't Sleeping

The less said, the better.

No, no, that's not fair. So much was invested in this fic. So much help came for this fic. My recipient liked this fic.

I wrote the last scene at the tail end of Legacy and [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic nicely told me, great scene, wrong fic, and she was totally and utterly correct. Then lo and behold, this pinch hit comes through, I pounce, and I say, "I'm going to write the fic for this scene."

And failed spectacularly. I couldn't get it to work because Clint's oblivious and stuck in his own head and failings and the whole thing just didn't want to come together. [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic patiently handheld and bounced and then the collection went live, I panicked, tweaked in a couple more changes, and let it go because I had no other choice.

I hope the ending doesn't come out of left field anymore because the story is now officially done.

As Real Girls Do for Rarely Written

That last Dottie scene in Agent Carter gave us soooo much insight into Dottie's psyche and I have soooo many Dottie + Peggy headcanon on how Dottie felt about everything, the reality of what kind of creature the Red Room turned out with her that stays hidden under the facade even to them.

I had a title and a snippet:

Who do you want me to be?

She is not human. She is a collection of the pieces of hundreds of other little girls fitted together into whoever she needs to be.

She is Peggy Carter's lipstick, Madame Alianovna's ballet slippers, Irina's piece of bread, and a random assassin's gun.

I can be anyone I want.

I ran with it.

I suppose it's time to do that thing again, this time for the treats.

I admit, writing some of these was terrifying. Let's start with the really, really easy one.

Playdate

"Playdate" was written for [livejournal.com profile] frith_in_thorns because she asked for anything Peggy Carter, and one of the things I walked away from the finale with was, to me, a fascinating outsider POV of Peggy. Dottie Underwood (whose real name is not provided) seemed to treat Peggy as the only real possible threat, someone to essentially play the game with on her own level. Considering Dottie's upbringing (and Peggy's competence), this was not an unreasonable viewpoint. The double drabble was more an exploration of that take on Peggy, the US Black Widow if you will, than anything else. And if I managed to poke around Dottie's psyche a bit while I was at it, what can I say? :bats eyelashes:

Women in Espionage 101: Five Lessons Taught by Peggy Carter

I wrote "Women in Espionage 101: Five Lessons Taught by Peggy Carter" largely because I wanted to write something for [livejournal.com profile] tielan because 1) her ficathon and it was kind of my thank you and 2) I just really like writing for her, okay?

[livejournal.com profile] tielan is the reason I love Maria so much and she turned me onto and collabed on the most incredible Maria fic ever (and I imprinted hard on it for Natasha too, I'll admit), "Counterfeit and Counterpart." So when she mentioned continuity with Peggy and Maria and the boys club aspect of SHIELD and how they dealt with that and then the working out of their SHIELD work, let's just say I squeed and went hunting for a quote I remembered about history (and didn't find) and started building on the idea of the legacy Peggy passed on and what Maria did with it.

Let's just say I had a lot of feels about Peggy already from Agent Carter and I just dumped them in with my feels about Maria and how people dish so much unjustice on her for doing her job and disagreeing with Fury and not liking the idea of the Avengers. But she wasn't entirely wrong. So out bubbled this little fic and a lot of things I wanted to acknowledge as good in Maria that I think get bashed too often.

Deep in the Throes

This fic, this fic. "Deep in the Throes" was my first treat planned for [livejournal.com profile] frith_in_thorns and the last finished. To use Yuletide terms, I was chased by bears the whole entire time.

Okay, it started out nice with some snippets from the beginning and end and one in the middle. Hurt/comfort, developing friendship, Maria being the one to comfort her. The first real scene I wrote was Natasha leaning on Maria in the corner of the bedroom.

How did she get there? Deprogramming. My serious headcanon for a while has been that Maria did that for Natasha, and if I was a good girl, I'd do the research to figure out which story gave me that, but I won't because it would take some digging.

Nice little idea, mix in a little of the stuff still churning back in my muse from "One More Day," and then next thing you know, the entire story kind of explodes on me and I'm trying to figure out how I got in over my head.

I still don't know how well the third chapter turned out because it's not my specialty to say the least and this fic made me grow and stretch and work as a writer, and I couldn't even try to keep my style out of it because writing like me was the only way it was going to get finished at all. But it did get finished.

I ended up really mixing in the song "Who Will Save You Now?" that was already percolating another Natasha fic in my head, and that I'll probably still write. I had to keep playing that song to get back in tone for the fic and to help me brainstorm, and I tried to stick to it thematically, which helped a lot.

The recipient was particularly not interested in Clint as a character, so I had to work with his obvious importance to her recruitment while generally minimizing his presence, which worked because it helped me focus on Maria.

So that's the story of this story. This story. I'm still exhausted from writing it and still haven't read the whole thing in another one sitting because yeah. I was so done.

Personal

And the scribbler emerges from household deadlines. Living with family means they will only put up with your not having actually finished moving in for so long. In their favor, they had put up with it for 10 months. It was past time for me to finish the process.

So on a personal note, I love my room, my bathroom, and my work area. Now, to keep it that way. Historically, that has been the biggest issue.

Reader/Viewer

I have to catch up on Jane the Virgin before they kill the episodes. Sadly, I waited three weeks to watch to get over the pairing I'm extremely not in favor of, and they killed the latest episodes instead of the earliest. Not too happy with Hulu about that. But they have three weeks of the latest episodes as of today, so I'll just say I missed those middle three and catch up because seriously, I want to know what happens and Rafael's really the only guy I have no use for. (Why, I don't know. I just don't, okay?)

I loved the winter finale of Nashville. I was thrilled to see a new episode. It threatens to be drama, including in my one happy spot of Avery/Juliette. I'm not ready for this.

I got the links to start Strike Back, season 2. Soon. The docket calleth.

I've been guilty pleasuring an episode here and there of Voyager, but I'm only about 7 episodes in, so no marathoning. Life is busy. I do love this show. I remember why Kes was my favorite character when I was younger, and I adore the Doctor and his name and first away mission. I definitely didn't see that particular episode before.

Fandom

I have the third piece for [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts left to do. My highest fanfic priority is a fic for the Marvel Poly Microbang (due on the 14th). And I have my assignments for [livejournal.com profile] beyondpanels and [livejournal.com profile] space_swap. Very exciting. Canon review will be in order for the latter. I'll probably hit the former first.

I discovered I really, really, really don't buy the idea that Natasha and Clint don't know about Coulson being alive. The Avengers probably don't, but two active SHIELD agents at their level of clearance? It's possible, but what do you know, I can't make myself believe it.

I also still don't buy that Clint was 'missing' during The Winter Soldier. I think he was in a different location, sure, doing his thing, or even don't mind the unfilmed scene (due to Renner's schedule) as potential headcanon, but I just don't think his absence needs explaining. SHIELD is big. He and Natasha are obviously not always assigned together.

And last little thought from my MCU meditations. It occurred to me why Black Widows are ballerinas. If you watch their fighting style (and you know how hard it is to actually break a neck), you realize it's built around feminine strength and abnormally strong legs. The best way to weaponize one's legs is ballet. A mugger once sued over injuries sustained from a ballerina simply kicking him once to incapacitate him. Ballerinas have incredible leg strength. Besides a cover, ballet would be extremely valuable training for a Widow.

And that's today's edition of randomosity. Hope everyone else is doing well!
scribblemyname: (assemble)
So last night, I stayed up waaaay too late watching the first two episodes of Agent Carter.

Wow. Just wow.

It's amazingly good and the characters are spot on. Peggy is so strong and competent and feminine and wonderful. She's a spy and super competent at being one. She's fearless and sensitive and gets hurt and takes down hostiles anyway. Jarvis is so funny and sweet and adorably proper, and so, so sweet on his wife. The supporting female characters are treasures. Howard Stark is such a Stark (though he really did need to look at her face more in my humble opinion). I love this series so much.

Now please, do not go by way of Gotham and Agents of SHIELD on my not viewing right now list due to too much violence/bloody gore. I'm squeamish and I want to keep watching you. Also please do not go by way of Jane the Virgin on my maybe I'll watch you again soon by pairing her up too soon or with a guy that just no. She's still grieving for Steve and please respect that before moving her on. (I don't mind her moving on, just not too soon.)
