I suppose it's time to do that thing again, this time for the treats.

I admit, writing some of these was terrifying. Let's start with the really, really easy one.

Playdate

"Playdate" was written for [livejournal.com profile] frith_in_thorns because she asked for anything Peggy Carter, and one of the things I walked away from the finale with was, to me, a fascinating outsider POV of Peggy. Dottie Underwood (whose real name is not provided) seemed to treat Peggy as the only real possible threat, someone to essentially play the game with on her own level. Considering Dottie's upbringing (and Peggy's competence), this was not an unreasonable viewpoint. The double drabble was more an exploration of that take on Peggy, the US Black Widow if you will, than anything else. And if I managed to poke around Dottie's psyche a bit while I was at it, what can I say? :bats eyelashes:

Women in Espionage 101: Five Lessons Taught by Peggy Carter

I wrote "Women in Espionage 101: Five Lessons Taught by Peggy Carter" largely because I wanted to write something for [livejournal.com profile] tielan because 1) her ficathon and it was kind of my thank you and 2) I just really like writing for her, okay?

[livejournal.com profile] tielan is the reason I love Maria so much and she turned me onto and collabed on the most incredible Maria fic ever (and I imprinted hard on it for Natasha too, I'll admit), "Counterfeit and Counterpart." So when she mentioned continuity with Peggy and Maria and the boys club aspect of SHIELD and how they dealt with that and then the working out of their SHIELD work, let's just say I squeed and went hunting for a quote I remembered about history (and didn't find) and started building on the idea of the legacy Peggy passed on and what Maria did with it.

Let's just say I had a lot of feels about Peggy already from Agent Carter and I just dumped them in with my feels about Maria and how people dish so much unjustice on her for doing her job and disagreeing with Fury and not liking the idea of the Avengers. But she wasn't entirely wrong. So out bubbled this little fic and a lot of things I wanted to acknowledge as good in Maria that I think get bashed too often.

Deep in the Throes

This fic, this fic. "Deep in the Throes" was my first treat planned for [livejournal.com profile] frith_in_thorns and the last finished. To use Yuletide terms, I was chased by bears the whole entire time.

Okay, it started out nice with some snippets from the beginning and end and one in the middle. Hurt/comfort, developing friendship, Maria being the one to comfort her. The first real scene I wrote was Natasha leaning on Maria in the corner of the bedroom.

How did she get there? Deprogramming. My serious headcanon for a while has been that Maria did that for Natasha, and if I was a good girl, I'd do the research to figure out which story gave me that, but I won't because it would take some digging.

Nice little idea, mix in a little of the stuff still churning back in my muse from "One More Day," and then next thing you know, the entire story kind of explodes on me and I'm trying to figure out how I got in over my head.

I still don't know how well the third chapter turned out because it's not my specialty to say the least and this fic made me grow and stretch and work as a writer, and I couldn't even try to keep my style out of it because writing like me was the only way it was going to get finished at all. But it did get finished.

I ended up really mixing in the song "Who Will Save You Now?" that was already percolating another Natasha fic in my head, and that I'll probably still write. I had to keep playing that song to get back in tone for the fic and to help me brainstorm, and I tried to stick to it thematically, which helped a lot.

The recipient was particularly not interested in Clint as a character, so I had to work with his obvious importance to her recruitment while generally minimizing his presence, which worked because it helped me focus on Maria.

So that's the story of this story. This story. I'm still exhausted from writing it and still haven't read the whole thing in another one sitting because yeah. I was so done.

I wrote two stories for the main MCU Ladies Ficathon collection. Treats will be happening later.

First, I wrote "Mitigation" for [livejournal.com profile] enigma731, whose work I adore and who I met through Clint/Natasha, so even though she said she was totally up for Bobbi/Clint on her request, I still ended up needing handholding to be sure this was going to work. I turned to [livejournal.com profile] findthesea because I saw her name in cahoots with enigma a lot and thought she'd know her taste. She did and major shout-out to my first reader for giving me the bravery to post this piece because I am actually very proud of it.

Basically, I fell in love with Bobbi/Clint as characterized in the MCU and am multi-shipper enough to dive right in. Then throw in Natasha and I wanted to respect the close relationship Clint and her obviously have and give Bobbi and Natasha a relationship and it all came out of this comics backstory item that Bobbi's been brainwashed and she's a spy's spy and these women have common ground. And the idea that Clint wouldn't kill Natasha because her situation hit too close to home. She was brainwashed. He wasn't about to mete out judgment on her for that.

Then Odessa and all the theories there and finally New York and "you know that I do" and this is where that post I wrote about I am not. writing. this. scene. again came in because seriously, I'm kind of done with writing the Helicarrier fight and scenes immediately surrounding it. I had to get creative because I was seriously not going to revisit it. Done and bored now.

So that's kind of how I got this epic (for me, miss flashfic writer anyway) friendship fic about Bobbi and Clint and Natasha being close friends. I also homaged a lot of other fics and the headcanons they gave me: "And Then There Was Us" gave me the three arrows scars for Clint, "Say Anything (Else)" (by my marvelous recipient) gave me Clint's broken arrowheads he eventually gets around to fixing, and there were others. I also wanted to go with Whedon and Renner's concept of Clint doing mostly just fine in the aftermath of Loki because this is SHIELD and the job is beyond weird and he knows how to compartmentalize and deal with this stuff.

So much love to my recipient for the prompt and my first reader for the encouragement.

Mitigation (4152 words) by scribblemyname
Chapters: 3/3
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Clint Barton/Bobbi Morse, Clint Barton & Natasha Romanov, Bobbi Morse & Natasha Romanov
Characters: Natasha Romanov, Bobbi Morse, Clint Barton
Additional Tags: Aftermath of brainwashing, partners, SHIELD, Recruitment, Established Relationship, Developing Friendship, Trust
Summary:

They should kill her. Hawkeye should have tried to.

But he didn't and he's staring at her now as though she just randomly stood on her head rather than asked him why.

Second, I wrote "We Are Not Who You Made Us," which actually started with this poetic title dropping into my head and I went, "Huh, muse? What's that about?" But the muse did not answer until I was going through the requests looking for another fic to write and bumped back into [livejournal.com profile] hiddencait's. Now I loved her requests when she wrote her letter, so I just moseyed back on over and read the Jemma/Bucky bit again.

I love the prompt, so let's talk about why I wrote the fic: it's the little things in that prompt. Someone pointed out recently my obsession with writing in little things, and so yeah, that's what got me.

That Jemma calls him James. That she's not the most obvious pick to work on his arm, but it makes sense anyhow. That she has a super-science crush on Bruce. How she's grown as an agent and a person, enough that Coulson sent her undercover in Hydra. That she's growing now without Fitz and how she had to back away because she was doing the opposite of helping by being there for him.

Then I read a post about PTSD and how people who have gone through trauma are changed by it; they have to become a person that includes the experiences they've gone through, and the healthy goal is NOT to get back to who you were, to reclaim the original, but to stabilize with all the new bits and pieces and gaps.

Throw in the title and there was no way I was going to not write this fic. Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic for the beta on it.

Summary:

There isn't any one thing that she can articulate. It's the way he copes so well but it feels like the difference between homesign and an actual sign language. It's his own way of coping, his own way of incorporating her suggestions but not actually having the talk with Steve that he can't be the person was before. It's the way James holds himself stiff and rigid and doesn't tell Stark when it hurts but winces for Jemma when she asks. It's all these tiny, little details that are all James and not therapy.

Funnily enough, I was super surprised no one guessed they were written by me. On "Mitigation," I totally forgot to replace the em-dash scene breaks with hr lines instead. Then there were my stylistic and storytelling quirks scattered all over it. I had a shot at the story for [livejournal.com profile] hiddencait not being completely obvious, but "Mitigation" was so me, I felt like it wasn't even anonymous.

All in all, this was an amazing ficathon to participate in, and I absolutely love [livejournal.com profile] tielan for hosting it.

So first off, I have not finished reading the MCU Ladies Ficathon collection, largely because I'm still writing my last treat for it. :headdesk:

Ahem. That said...

I wanted to mention something remarkable to me about this collection that's already cropped up plenty in what I've read there. These works managed to breathe new life into what, to me, was becoming a rather stale genre: Natasha Romanov joins SHIELD, to use the official tag.

These stories do that by simply using new characters and incorporating the new material provided by Agent Carter about the Black Widow program. It's remarkable how different and fresh the stories feel compared to the same retread of her recruitment I usually read and sometimes write.

So go check it out!

Yes, I got two and I'm so over the moon about it that I am shamelessly gloating over my two.

It is raining and Darcy is bored.

I asked for epic Jane and Darcy friendship with a dose of Sif and this adorable little rainy night shenanigans fic delivers. Darcy's doing shots (wrong), Jane wants alcohol for her gear not herself, and Sif has arrived with grave misgivings to haul them back to Asgard. Naturally, Darcy stalls her with poptarts. Kinda ends on a cliffhanger but it's a nice little ditty nevertheless.

A series of ficlets about these awesome, amazing women and hit sooo many of my asks, giving me little peeks under the covers of theses ladies. I can't even pick a favorite. It's layers and snippets of character study and just go read, okay?
scribblemyname: (agents of shield)
Side note: I am soooooo excited about the MCU Ladies Fic Exchange. I've been peeking at the tagslist for the currently approved stories, [livejournal.com profile] tielan's been awesome, and I am super surprised and pleased with what I've written so far for the exchange. I don't often write what I term "agressively gen" fics, but I did for this one. I also wrote something mildly shippy, but that was also fun.

Now, if I can wrap this one last treat.

I had a nice simple hurt/comfort plot bunny and the sucker exploded on me. :headdesk: I finally resorted to what I had to do to get "Catch My Breath" moving along on the last possible day to write it. I hit the saved fanvids and music videos I've got bookmarked until something started inspiring me past the stallouts. Thankfully, this time I have three days to finish instead of one. I'd tell you the song, but that'd give away the fic on story reveals, so I'll keep it close to my chest and pray to heaven I pull off this story because there's no way I have the chops for it, so I'm going to have to grow them. I didn't ask for epic plotbunny, but it came along anyway.

:headdesk:

Speaking of which, treating is open to anyone, signed up for the exchange or not. There are some super awesome requests, and the treats collection is open for submissions.

Oh bother. Have I posted anywhere about the MCU Ladies Treats Collection? I don't remember.

If you want to add a 'treat' for one of the participants in the MCU Ladies Ficathon, then post your work at AO3 and put "MCULadiesTreat2015" in the collections field when posting.

And anyone can post to it, not just the participants. So if you missed signing up, but you see a story you'd like to write from the Requests of the MCU Ladies Ficathon, then please do write something and treat someone with it!

Dear MCU Ladies Author:

Thank you for writing me awesome ladies being awesome! I adore the Marvel ladies and I always want to know more about them and read more fic. I admit to having my favorites though and heads up, I haven't actually seen the Captain America movies, just a few clips and a lot of reading for Winter Soldier but not the original one. I don't really know Sharon Carter except from fic.

That said.

General Squicks: embarrassment, body-related humor, femslash, gore, graphic violence (I'm very squeamish), gratuitous on-screen, uncensored profanity.

General Do Not Write for Me at All: deathfic, tragedy, suicidal ideation, torture, betrayal/infidelity.

General Loves: characterization, worldbuilding, backstory, mind control/brainwashing and recovery, hurt/comfort, messy relationships, women whose strength extends to all areas of their life, feelings, competence. I like humor, fluff, angst, domesticity, identityfic, character studies, etc.
