So I wanted to challenge myself. (Any time I decide I want to challenge myself, I wish someone would pry my fingers off the keys and order me to only offer fandoms I know inside out and backwards.) I offered Chronicles of Narnia. I had to defaul this fic and gift it as a treat because I knew a little beforehand it wouldn't be done on time.

:makes face:

The original story is some great bonding moments between Jill and Eustace, but there's this spot where she asks him to tell her about last time, and he says he doesn't know how to tell stories. I wrote the title and figured it would come easy. It didn't. I had to go read Dawn Treader again and whoa, did I catch some feels when I did. It was hard to write because usually when I write about this kind of loss, I do it in poetry or half-poetry, not facts, not misdirection. I'm glad I wrote it though and I think the effort that went into it was worth it.

Remix [livejournal.com profile] tielan? Who in their right mind wouldn't? Now, granted, I really wanted to remix a couple other people too and I had to drop a claim for Roswell because again, time, but this one was from tielan and for characters I've missed writing something fierce: Rogue and Logan from pre-X3. So, yes, I was all over it for that reason alone.

She thinks about it sometimes, when she's curled up under Bobby's arm and he's feeling a little raw, a little vulnerable. She thinks about telling him she's not in love with Logan, despite whatever brief crush she'd felt when he followed through on his promise and gave her everything to keep her alive.

So as I dig into this intelligence community research, my whole perspective is shifting a bit on a few things.

  1. Did you know law enforcement and intelligence are separate? I know [livejournal.com profile] alphaflyer probably knew that, but it explains a lot to me, including why SHIELD's I stands for Intervention not Intelligence.

  2. I totally get SHIELD's gripe with the X-Men now. It's like the private *coughs* vigilante *coughs* organization that's trying to do SHIELD's sanctioned job without said sanctions. Granted, they have the tools to do it (powers), but they should be joining agencies like SHIELD, except treated like... Oh, right. Still, I get the tension now and the issues and why SHIELD is not fond of the X-Men as a rule.

  3. The IMF and SHIELD are both law enforcement agencies and that changes a lot about the color of how they gather and gain intelligence and then what they do with it.

  4. The IMF, especially being as top secret as it is, is probably considered a terrorist organization to other countries in much the same way that the Red Room could be considered the same to nonSoviet bloc nations. I get why the disavowal thing. Wow. Wanton property damage, "an organization of chaos" indeed, etc. SHIELD gets away with it largely and only because they're intervening in situations where the wanton property damage and fallout is already a given and not started by them. When it is started by them without justifiable causes, I imagine those agents get in a lot of trouble.

I could be reading this wrong, but that's my impressions so far. I am duly fascinated.

Prompt: December 20. Scott, Rogue, and Remy for lithiumlaughter

At first Rogue thought the glowing pinprick was Logan, smoking a cigar out among the headstones. Then she saw glowing eyes above it and scrambled hastily to her feet, glove off, voice biting out into the darkness, "Who are you?"

A flare of sudden pink light. The first thing her vision latched onto as it adjusted was a twirling, glowing, playing card. The two of clubs.

"Y' always win wit' de deuce," the stranger said as he laid it gently atop Scott Summer's headstone. He was tall, shaggy reddish brown hair, glowing red eyes on blacks instead of whites, and a long brown trench coat over the faint gleam of some kind of body armor. His smile was almost a smirk, but it lacked malice or smugness, instead carrying the impression of friendly sorrow. "I tol' him t' stay away from de queens, but he didn't listen. Mais, never did dat m'self."

His accent was thickly southern, Cajun. Rogue wanted to back up a half step from his odd, if compelling presence, but made herself stay, skin ready to touch. He'd obviously known Scott. "Who are you?" she demanded.

"Don't matter, chère." He shrugged, then said, "But 'm Gambit, if dat makes y' feel better."

She looked at him again, at the way he held himself, the line of his profile, the vaguely familiar features, but scruffier than Scott's, more world-weary and dangerous. "You the black sheep of the family?"

Gambit chuckled but his face was grim. "One way o' putting it. What about you, chère? Sitting out here among de graves. You his girlfriend after Jeannie died?"

Rogue stiffened under his sharp appraisal. "No. A student."

A faint nod.

"I miss them," she said softly, almost before she realized it.

Gambit sighed, an empathetic sound. He held up a card, the Ace of Spades. "Dis be for Stormy, if y'll give it to her."

She nodded, accepted it.

"Dis be for you."

Her mouth stuttered open, but the card, a Queen of Hearts, was pressed into her hand, and Gambit was already on the other side of the headstone, running one finger regretfully along the face of the card he'd laid there earlier.

"And dis… Goodbye, mon frère."

The brightness flared, burned, and went out.

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] in_the_blue:

So just because I'm on there more now and because my newest stuff just totally blew away my older stuff and I have two WIPs that need finishing to boot, the top 10 fics on Archive of Our Own, by hits.

  1. Carnal (X-Men Movieverse) WIP. An old acquaintance of Rogue and Storm's joins the X-Men. Romy

  2. The Rogue's Gambit (X-Men Movieverse). She could have told him all the reasons why. But the short of it was simpler. She was doing it for her. Romy oneshot

  3. Real (X-Men Movieverse). Set during Carnal. What is real?

  4. Tingo (Pascuense) (Marvel Cinematic Universe). After the fall of SHIELD, Clint didn’t want to move in to the Avengers Tower. Natasha thought it only practical.

  5. 'Til Death Do Us Part (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Clint and Natasha worked as if they were two halves of one whole well before he was bleeding out and she saved him, before she truly put the Winter Soldier behind her.

  6. Son o' de Guild (X-Men Movieverse) WIP. What if Remy LeBeau turned to Xavier's School for the Gifted instead of Sinister? Set after X1.

  7. Shall We Dance? (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Three safehouses. Clint Barton saved her life once. Betrayed by the Red Room, Natasha decides to look for him—in her own way.

  8. Another Way (Divergent series — Veronica Roth). A choice neither brave nor selfless.

  9. The Ones Who Choose (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Who is family? Natasha Romanova surprised herself by moving in to the Stark Tower and making her suite her own. Tony Stark surprises her by commenting on it.

  10. Skin Deep (X-Men Movieverse). When Raven was seven years old, Charles wasn't afraid of her skin. Now, she believes he is disgusted by it. She's wrong.

THE TEA

Base:
Fill an oversized mug halfway full of favorite milk. Boil enough water to top it off. Stir the two together in the mug until the base is piping hot, but not near to boiling.

Brew:
Add two tea bags of Maté Factor’s Dark Roast. Allow to steep for 10 – 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove tea bags before drinking.

THE CRUMPETS

Add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to a small bowl. Stir in 1 – 2 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil until all powder is thoroughly dissolved and the mixture is a dark, rich brown. Spread over favorite bread and toast as usual. Cut in small triangles before serving.

THE FICLET

Story Title: The Way to a Girl’s Heart
Fandom:
X-Men Movieverse
Summary: St. John Allerdyce discovers the way to his girl’s heart quite by accident. A kyro ficlet.

Kitty eyed the spread suspiciously.

“Goodness, Kitty. I can cook!” St. John Allerdyce glared at his girlfriend as he brought his teapot over to the table.

She sniffed at him. She did. The girl who could down their enemies with a single taste of her infamous blueberry muffins. The girl who scared off bad guys with her special, cannot-ever-cook superpowers and kindly-intentioned sense of hospitality.

He shook his head and scowled, but he did not allow himself to be distracted from his role as proper host. St. John had learned to cook from an overworked hotel maid he’d met on arrival in America who didn’t mind feeding him if he kept the house clean and maintained. It was sheer survival. She taught him her entire repertoire (ten dishes and three beverages) and each only once. If he didn’t get it, he didn’t eat and that was that.

“Tea.” He poured into the perfect little teacup on its perfect little saucer that Storm had generously allowed him to use. Kitty could eat safely enough. It was a warm, rich brew: his favorite chicory blend with a pinch of ginger, a dash of cinnamon, and a hefty dose of rooibos he’d bought fresh at a local market, all of it steeped in milk.

Finally, Kitty showed a little appreciationg. “This looks good,” she admitted.

“It should,” he replied and filled her plate with a selection of different crumpets: a tiny cinnamon apple sandwich, strawberries spread on rye, a ginger snap, and three of her favorite shortbreads.

“Did you make these all yourself?” she asked, still half-cautious to go with her half-salivating.

He nodded, sat, and helped himself, but his attention was fixed on her taste-testing each item with a tiny nibble. Her eyebrows swung upward. “This is really good.” She took a tiny sip of the tea and those eyebrows went even higher. “Where’d you learn to make this?”

St. John chuckled at her then.

Kitty went on enjoying the repast, stealing little looks at him out of the corner of her eye while he pretended not to notice. He may have been romantic enough to make and serve her an evening meal, but he wasn’t yet to the point where he wanted to spill his heart to her or commit himself more than necessary.

Nevertheless, he nearly spilled his tea when a he felt a small hand make its way into his under the table then hold on tightly. He opened his mouth to say something, stared at Kitty, who was doing an admirable job of pretending there was nothing more interesting in the world than her teacup and the Monét painting on the wall above the table, then closed his mouth again.

He glanced down at his own plate, then back at Kitty. She caught his look from the corner of her eye, smiled shyly, then focused back in on her cup.

Without saying a word, St. John Allerdyce ran his thumb over the back of her hand and squeezed back.
